    , Article Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering ; Volume 6, Issue 4 , December , 2011 , Pages 409-418 ; 20950233 (ISSN) Rezvanil, M. J ; Kargarnovin, M. H ; Younesian, D ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The response of an infinite Timoshenko beam subjected to a harmonic moving load based on the thirdorder shear deformation theory (TSDT) is studied. The beam is made of laminated composite, and located on a Pasternak viscoelastic foundation. By using the principle of total minimum potential energy, the governing partial differential equations of motion are obtained. The solution is directed to compute the deflection and bending moment distribution along the length of the beam. Also, the effects of two types of composite materials, stiffness and shear layer viscosity coefficients of foundation, velocity and frequency of the moving load over the beam response are studied. In order to...

    Abstract
Porphyrin-POM hybrid materials with excellent NLO properties are supposed to be a worthy entrant for forthcoming telecommunication, optical fibers, optical data storage and optical limiting devices, but due to adverse solubility problems, they are replaced by polymeric materials. Herein, we assessed third order NLO and second hyperpolarizability of porphyrin-polyimide compounds (NH-PI and Zn-PI) synthesized from the reaction of 4,4ʹ-hexafluoroisopropylidene-diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) with C44H32N6 (NH-DATPP) and C44H30N4Zn (Zn-DATPP) porphyrins under ambient conditions. The Z-scan measurement of these compounds revealed reverse saturation absorption as well as self-defocusing performance....

Third Order differential Equations Describing Pseudospherical Surfaces

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shabani, Shahaboddin (Author) ; Hesaraki, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Third order differential equations which describe pseudospherical surfaces are considered. The complete classification of a class of such equations is given. A linear problem with one or more parameters, also known as zero curvature representation, for which the equation is the integrability condition, is explicitly given. The classification provides five large families of differential equations. Third order nonlinear dispersive wave equations, such as the Camassa–Holm equation and Degasperis–Procesi equation are examples contained in the classification. Many other explicit examples are included

Dynamics of nanodroplets on wettability gradient surfaces

    , Article Journal of Physics Condensed Matter ; Volume 23, Issue 8 , February , 2011 ; 09538984 (ISSN) Moosavi, A ; Mohammadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
A lubrication model is used to study the dynamics of nanoscale droplets on wettability gradient surfaces. The effects of the gradient size, size of the nanodroplets and the slip on the dynamics have been studied. Our results indicate that the position of the center of mass of the droplets can be well described in terms of a third-order polynomial function of the time of the motion for all the cases considered. By increasing the size of the droplets the dynamics increases. It is also shown that the slip can considerably enhance the dynamics. The results have been compared with the results obtained using theoretical models and molecular dynamics simulations

    , Article 27th Congress of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences 2010, ICAS 2010, 19 September 2010 through 24 September 2010, Nice ; Volume 3 , 2010 , Pages 2060-2068 ; 9781617820496 (ISBN) Dastoom Laatleyli, H ; Abedian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this study the energy concept along with the classical plate theory (CPT), first and third order shear deformation theories (FSDT and TSDT) are used to predict the large deflection and through the thickness stresses of a FGM plate. For defining the volume fraction of the FGM constituent materials three different functions are considered; simple power-law (PFGM), exponential (E-FGM) and sigmoid (S_FGM) functions. Power-law and exponential functions are commonly used tocontrol the variations of properties of FGMs. However, with both functions, a stress concentration appears due to abruptchange of the volume fraction of the constituents. Therefore, a sigmoid FGM is used to define a new...

Fluorescent microscopy using localized excitation source with gold nanotriangles: A computational study

    , Article Photonics and Nanostructures - Fundamentals and Applications ; Volume 9, Issue 3 , 2011 , Pages 219-224 ; 15694410 (ISSN) Sasanpour, P ; Rashidian, B ; Vossoughi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
A new method for fluorescent microscopy has been proposed. Proposed method uses indirect excitation of fluorophores with nanometer localized illuminating source. Localized source is created at corners of gold nanotriangles which are deposited on glass substrate. Actually the combination of gold nanotriangle (deposited on glass) acts as active substrate (where species will be placed) for our proposed method. The structure will be scanned with a focused beam of laser (or combination of beams). Due to electric field enhancement in corners and edges of nanotringle (because of surface plasmons), third order nonlinear effect will be enhanced accordingly. Enhancement in third order nonlinearity...

Free Vibration and Buckling Analysis of Functionally Graded Beams with an Edge Crack

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sherafatnia, Khalil (Author) ; Farrahi, Gholamhossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Cracks significantly change the vibration response of structures. Cracks which exist in structures as a defect in the material or created by repeated loads, reduce the natural frequencies and change the vibration mode shapes. Therefore with measuring the vibration response of structures, the existence and position of cracks are detected. This research analytically investigates the free vibration and elastic buckling of a beam made of functionally graded materials (FGM) with open edge cracks using Reddy's beam theory and the rotational spring model. It is assumed that the material properties vary along the beam thickness according to a power law distribution in terms of volume fraction of...

Deflection of light and Shapiro delay: An equivalent medium theory approach

    , Article Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering ; Volume 8480 , 2012 ; 0277786X (ISSN) ; 9780819491978 (ISBN) Khorasani, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We discuss the deflection of light and Shapiro delay under the influence of gravity as described by Schwarzschild metric. We obtain an exact expression based on the coordinate velocity, as first set forth by Einstein, and present a discussion on the effect of velocity anisotropy. We conclude that the anisotropy in the coordinate velocity, as the velocity apparent to a distant observer, gives rise to a third order error in the deflection angle, so that the practical astronomical observations from gravitational lensing data remain inconclusive on the anisotropy. However, measurement of Shapiro delay provides a fairly convenient way to determine whether the spacetime is optically anisotropic...

Cubic nonlinear analysis of interaction between a surface wave and two interfacial waves in an open two-layer fluid

    , Article Fluid Dynamics Research ; Volume 44, Issue 5 , June , 2012 ; 01695983 (ISSN) Tahvildari, N ; Jamali, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    IOP  2012
    Abstract
A third-order asymptotic analysis is conducted to study the three-dimensional resonant interaction between a monochromatic progressive surface wave and two oblique interfacial waves in an open, lightly viscous, two-layer fluid of intermediate depth. By solving the evolution equations of the waves, the short- and long-term behaviors of the interfacial waves are studied. The analysis provides a correction to the second-order theory. The results indicate that the third-order analysis predicts a much lower limit on the growth of the interfacial waves than the second-order theory. Furthermore, in the long term, viscous effects cause the interfacial wave amplitudes to approach a constant value....

Analysis and optimization of SFDR in differential active-RC filters

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I: Regular Papers ; Volume 59, Issue 6 , December , 2012 , Pages 1168-1177 ; 15498328 (ISSN) Meghdadi, M ; Bakhtiar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents a method for optimizing SFDR in differential active-RC filters. Simple analytical expressions for noise and third-order intermodulation (IM3) distortion in active-RC filters are derived. The nonlinear behavior of two-stage Miller-compensated op amps, which are extensively used in active-RC implementations, is also modeled. These expressions and models are used to maximize SFDR in active-RC filters by means of proper admittance scaling and optimizing the share of each op amp in the total power consumption. It is shown that both the power consumption of the filter and its area can be significantly reduced, for a given SFDR, by exploiting the presented method

Three-dimensional modular discriminant analysis (3DMDA): A new feature extraction approach for face recognition

    , Article Computers and Electrical Engineering ; Volume 37, Issue 5 , 2011 , Pages 811-823 ; 00457906 (ISSN) Safayani, M ; Manzuri Shalmani, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we present a novel multilinear algebra based feature extraction approach for face recognition which preserves some implicit structural or locally-spatial information among elements of the original images. We call this method three-dimensional modular discriminant analysis (3DMDA). Our approach uses a new data model called third-order tensor model (3TM) for representing the face images. In this model, each image is partitioned into the several equal size local blocks, and the local blocks are combined to represent the image as a third-order tensor. Then, a new optimization algorithm called direct mode (d-mode) is introduced for learning three optimal projection axes. Extensive...

Novel method for cancer cell apoptosis by localized UV light with gold nanostructures: A theoretical investigation

    , Article Nano ; Volume 5, Issue 6 , 2010 , Pages 325-332 ; 17932920 (ISSN) Sasanpour, P ; Rashidian, B ; Rashidian, B ; Vossoughi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
A novel approach for phototherapy is proposed. The proposed method is based on cell apoptosis according to halting activation of cancer cell membrane receptor by exposure to UV light pulses without any side effect. In the proposed method, gold nanoparticles are directed to cancerous cells by conjugating their surface with specific ligands. UV light is created locally adjacent to cells around the gold nanoparticles. UV light is generated due to nonlinear interaction of visible light with gold nanoparticles because of enhancement in third order nonlinear effects. For example, by using 780 nm laser, 260 nm UV will be generated around the nanoparticle because of third harmonic generation...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Sobhani, Elaheh (Author) ; Babaiezadeh, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Comon, Pierre (Co-Supervisor) ; Jutten, Christian (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Tensors or multi-way arrays are useful tools to identify unknown quantities thanks to the uniqueness of their decomposition. Tensor decompositions have been widely applied to obtain unknown components with physical meanings in many applications such as medical image and signal processing, hyperspectral images analysis, chemometrics, etc.In this thesis, we investigate the application of tensor decomposition for probability estimations, which are required for some targeted data/text mining tasks such as unsupervised clustering of data/documents. Besides criticizing the existing tensor decomposition algorithms for probability estimations, we propose to apply some proper constrained tensor...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Azizi, Mohsen (Author) ; Fallah Ragabzadeh, Famida (Supervisor) ; Zohoor, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, based on Donnel’s shell theory and the theory of third-order shear deformation, and taking into consideration von Karman non-linearity terms, the analysis of buckling of functionally graded (FG) and multi-layered cylindrical shell with transversely isotropic layers, subjected to different loadings, was done. Along this line, first using the principle of minimum total potential energy, and based on the Donnel’s shell theory and the theory of third-order shear deformation, five couple equilibrium equations for cylindrical shell were produced. Next these five coupled equilibrium equations were reduced to three uncoupled equilibrium equation which are, in terms of transverse...

An analytical solution for dynamic behavior of thick doubly curved functionally graded smart panels

    , Article Composite Structures ; Vol. 107, issue , January , 2014 , p. 88-102 Sayyaadi, H ; Askari Farsangi, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, an analytical solution is presented for free vibration and dynamic behavior of doubly curved laminated shell consisting of a functionally graded core layer and surface attached functionally graded piezoelectric layers. Shell through-thickness kinematics is based on higher order shear deformation theory of shells, whereas a quadratic variation is assumed for electric potential. Using Hamilton's principle and Maxwell's equation, the governing equations of motion under mechanical loads are derived as seven highly coupled partial differential equations. Implementing Laplace transformation, doing few mathematical operations and using Laplace inverse method, time dependencies of...

Noise canceling balun-LNA with enhanced IIP2 and IIP3 for digital TV applications

    , Article IEICE Transactions on Electronics ; Volume E95-C, Issue 1 , 2012 , Pages 146-154 ; 09168524 (ISSN) Saeedi, S ; Atarodi, M
    Abstract
An inductorless low noise amplifier (LNA) with active balun for digital TV (DTV) applications is presented. The LNA exploits a noise cancellation technique which allows for simultaneous wide-band impedance matching and low noise design. The matching and amplifier stages in the LNA topology perform single-ended to differential signal conversion with balanced output. The second and third-order nonlinearity of the individual amplifiers as well as the distortion caused by the interaction between the stages are suppressed to achieve high IIP2 and IIP3. A method for intrinsic cancellation of the second-order interaction is employed to reduce the dependence of the IIP3 on the frequency spacing...

    , Article Acta Mechanica ; Volume 219, Issue 1-2 , January , 2011 , Pages 65-75 ; 00015970 (ISSN) Jafari Talookolaei, R. A ; Salarieh, H ; Kargarnovin, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
The large amplitude free vibration of an unsymmetrically laminated composite beam (LCB) on a nonlinear elastic foundation subjected to axial load has been studied. The equation of motion for the axial and transverse deformations of a geometrically nonlinear LCB is derived. Using the Ritz method, the governing equation is reduced to a time-dependent Duffing equation with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. The homotopy analysis method (HAM) is used to obtain exact expressions for the dynamic response of the LCB. This study shows that the third-order approximation of the HAM leads to highly accurate solutions that are valid for a wide range of vibration amplitudes. The effects of different...

Application of third order shear deformation theory in buckling analysis of 2D-functionally graded cylindrical shell reinforced by axial stiffeners

    , Article Composites Part B: Engineering ; Volume 79 , September , 2015 , Pages 236-253 ; 13598368 (ISSN) Satouri, S ; Kargarnovin, M. H ; Allahkarami, F ; Asanjarani, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2015
    Abstract
This paper presents buckling analysis of a two-dimensional functionally graded cylindrical shell reinforced by axial stiffeners (stringer) under combined compressive axial and transverse uniform distributive load. The shell material properties are graded in the direction of thickness and length according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. Primarily, the third order shear deformation theory (TSDT) is used to derive the equilibrium and stability equations. Since there is no closed form solution, the numerical differential quadrature method, (DQM), is applied for solving the stability equations. Initially, the obtained results for an...

    Abstract
In this study, the dynamic response of the laminated composite beam with arbitrary lay-ups has been investigated within the framework of the third-order shear deformation theory using the finite element method. A new three-nodded finite element compliant with the theory is introduced next. To deal with the dynamic contact between the delaminated segments, unilateral contact constraints are employed in conjunction with Lagrange multiplier method. Furthermore, the Poisson's effect is incorporated in the formulation of the beam constitutive equation. Also, the higher-order inertia effects and material couplings (flexure-tensile, flexure-twist and tensile-twist couplings) are considered in the...
