Three-dimensional elasticity analysis of functionally graded rotating cylinders with variable thickness profile

, Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science ; Volume 226, Issue 3 , 2012 , Pages 585-594 ; 09544062 (ISSN) Ghafoori, E ; Asghari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A three-dimensional elasticity solution for the analysis of functionally graded rotating cylinders with variable thickness profile is proposed. The axisymmetric structure has been divided in several divisions in the radial direction. Constant mechanical properties and thickness profile are assumed within each division. The solution is considered for four different thickness profiles, namely constant, linear, concave, and convex. It is shown that the linear, concave, and convex thickness profiles have smaller stress values compared to a constant thickness profile. The effects of various grading indices as well as different boundary conditions, namely solid, free-free hollow and fixed-free...

A three-dimensional elasticity solution for functionally graded rotating disks

    Abstract
A semi-analytical three-dimensional elasticity solution for rotating functionally graded disks for both of hollow and solid disks is presented. The aim is to generalize an available two-dimensional plane-stress solution to a three-dimensional one. Although for the thin disks problems the two-dimensional solution provides appropriate results, for the thick disks, a three-dimensional elasticity solution should be considered to avoid poor results. It is shown that although the plane-stress solution satisfies all the governing three-dimensional equations of motion and boundary conditions, it fails to give a compatible three-dimensional strain field. A valid three-dimensional solution has been...

    Abstract
Three-dimensional thermo-mechanical stress analysis of composite joints with bi-adhesive bonding is presented using the full layerwise theory. Based on three-dimensional elasticity theory, sets of fully coupled governing differential equations are derived using the principle of minimum total potential energy and are simultaneously solved using the state space approach. Results show that bi-adhesive bonding substantially relieves the edge effects. Moreover, series of parametric studies reveal the nonlinear effects of bonding length ratio and the relative stiffness and coefficient of thermal expansion of the mid- and side-adhesives. It is also concluded that the optimum design of a bi-adhesive...
