Dynamic Analysis of Mashhad Line 2 Subway Structure under Internal Blast Loading

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Darbarrazavi, Ehsan (Author) ; Sadaghiani, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Public transit system has become one of the targets of terrorist attacks using explosives, examples of which include the 1995 attack on Paris subway and the 2004 attack on Moscow subway. Under the present context of intense threats of terrorist attacks on subway systems in metropolitan areas around the world, explicit three-dimensional Finite Element method was used to investigate the dynamic response and damage of subway structures under internal blast loading. The study was motivated by the fact that explosion in subway structure may not only cause direct life loss, but also damage the subway structure and lead to further loss of lives and properties. The study used the Mashhadsubway...

3D Numerical Modeling of Dynamic Instability Induced by Liquefaction in Loose Sand Deposit when Earthquake Occurs Perpendicular to the Slope

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nazari Tileki, Ali (Author) ; Pak, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Soil liquefaction occurring in loose saturated sand deposits during seismic loadings is one of the most destructive earthquake-induced phenomena in the field of earthquake geotechnical engineering. Catastrophic destructions due to this phenomenon that have been observed in the earthquakes such as Kobe (1995), Chi-Chi (1999), etc. has led to extensive studies in this field. In case of soil slopes prone to liquefaction hazard, detailed analysis of this phenomenon requires considering soil-related factors (e.g. shear strength, relative density, permeability, slope geometry) on the one hand, and earthquake-related characteristics (e.g. amplitude, frequency, duration) on the other. Numerical...

Stability Analysis of Taloun Exploratory Tunnel with Application of Back Analysis Technique and Considering Interaction Between Three Parallels Taloun Tunnels by Three Dimensional Modeling

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rostami, Ali (Author) ; Sedghiani, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The main purpose of this research is to investigate geotechnical parameters of surrounding rock mass of Taloun tunnels (Tehran-Shomal freeway, Iran), with application of back analysis technique and consideration of monitoring data, in order to analyzing stability of tunnel at particular monitoring station 10 (NPI10). First, the geo mechanical parameters were investigated by sensitivity analysis preceded back analysis due to determine significant geotechnical parameters of rock mass contributed to tunnel excavation with respect of displacement and stress level. Following this section sensitivity analysis of different parameters were conducted. In this section it has been found that, the most...

A novel three-dimensional element free Galerkin (EFG) code for simulating two-phase fluid flow in porous materials

    , Article Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements ; Vol. 39, issue. 1 , 2014 , pp. 53-63 ; ISSN: 09557997 Samimi, S ; Pak, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In the past few decades, numerical simulation of multiphase flow systems has received increasing attention because of its importance in various fields of science and engineering. In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical model is developed for the analysis of simultaneous flow of two fluids through porous media. The numerical approach is fairly new based on the element-free Galerkin (EFG) method. The EFG is a type of mesh-less method which has rarely been used in the field of flow in porous media. The weak forms of the governing partial differential equations are derived by applying the weighted residual method and Galerkin technique. The penalty method is utilized for imposition of the...

    Abstract
The efficiency of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell is straightly correlated to the bipolar plate design and fluid channel arrangements. Higher produced energy can be attained by optimal design of type, size, or patterns of the channels. Previous researches showed that the bipolar plate channel design has a considerable effect on reactant distribution uniformity as well as humidity control in PEM fuel cells. This paper concentrates on enhancements in the fuel cell performance by optimization of bipolar plate design and channels configurations. A numerical model of flow distribution based on Navier-Stokes equations using individual computer code is presented. The results gained from...

A numerical study on a photovoltaic thermal system integrated with a thermoelectric generator module

    , Article Renewable Energy ; Volume 153 , 2020 , Pages 1261-1271 Salari, A ; Parcheforosh, A ; Hakkaki Fard, A ; Amadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
In this work, a three-dimensional numerical model is developed to investigate the performance of a photovoltaic thermal system integrated with a thermoelectric generator module (PVT/TE). Furthermore, the effects of various operating parameters such as solar radiation, coolant mass flow rate, and inlet and ambient temperatures on the performance of both the PVT and PVT/TE systems are investigated and compared. Based on the obtained results, the electrical efficiency of the PVT/TE system, when exposed to solar radiation of 600 and 1000 W/m2, is 6.23% and 10.41% higher than that of the PVT system, respectively. Besides, the electrical efficiency of the PVT and PVT/TE by increasing the inlet...
