Abstract
A Timetabling problem is usually defined as assigning a set of events to a number of rooms and timeslots such that they satisfy a number of constraints. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a stochastic, population-based computer problem-solving algorithm; it is a kind of swarm intelligence that is based on social-psychological principles and provides insights into social behavior, as well as contributing to engineering applications. This paper applies the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm to the classic Timetabling problem. This is inspired by similar attempts belonging to the evolutionary paradigm in which the metaheuristic involved is tweaked to suit the grouping nature of problems...

Abstract
This paper presents an event-driven simulation-based optimization method for solving the train timetabling problem to minimize the total traveling time in the hybrid single and double track railway networks. The simulation approach is well applied for solving the train timetabling problems. In present simulation model, the stations and block sections of the railway network are respectively considered as the nodes and edges of the network model. The developed software named SIMARAIL has the capability of scheduling trains in large scale networks respecting the capacity constraints and infrastructure characteristics. This simulation model for railway timetabling is based on a detailed...

Abstract
This paper presents a simulation-based optimization approach for railway timetabling, which is made interesting by the need for trains to stop periodically to allow passengers to pray. The developed framework is based on integration of a simulation model and an evolutionary path re-linking algorithm with the capability of scheduling trains, subject to the capacity constraints in order to minimize the total waiting times. A customized deadlock avoidance method has been developed which is based on a conditional capacity allocation. The proposed look-ahead deadlock avoidance approach is effective and easy to implement in the simulation model. A case study of the Iranian Railway (RAI) is...
Cooling/heating load management in educational buildings through course scheduling

Abstract
This paper presents a comprehensive educational model considering share resources among several departments bounded to educational limitations for optimizing energy consumption. The thermal model calculates the load based on the ambient temperature to minimize the user's knowledge of the building's thermal model. It determines the percentage reduction of the building's heating load in case of a change in room temperature, a term's start date, and sharing classes compared to standard curricula. It employs linear Boolean optimization. Class planning is carried out concerning minimizing energy use, students' preferences, charts, educational constraints, professors' schedules, classes' numbers,...
Scheduling the Shifts of Physicians During Covid-19 Pandemic
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rafiee, Majid (Supervisor)
Abstract
People's lives have been affected by the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Due to the high infectivity, governments have screened people, imposed curfews, mandated the use of masks, and so on to reduce the rate of transmission of the disease among people. Meanwhile, infected people are getting treatments: people who are slightly affected are quarantined at home, and those who are heavily affected are treated in hospitals. Hence there is an excessive increase in the hospital workload. On the one hand, this increased workload leads to physical fatigue and, on the other hand, to psychological problems, stress, etc. for the healthcare professionals. Therefore, it is very important to take care of...
Intelligent timetable evaluation using fuzzy AHP
, Article Expert Systems with Applications ; Volume 38, Issue 4 , 2011 , Pages 3718-3723 ; 09574174 (ISSN) ; Kanani, A ; Tootoonchi, M ; Afzali, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
There is a substantial body of empirical literature that establishes the benefits of customer satisfaction for enterprises. Among different available options to present our service, selecting the best choice in the customers' eyes is a vital decision. Developing appropriate passenger train schedules is counted as one of the major managerial concerns in transportation environment. Although different algorithms have been developed to create predictive schedules for a fleet of passenger trains using different performance indicators, selecting the best one embraces some ambiguities and uncertainties. That is because a one-dimensional objective function may not be sufficient for responding...
Timetable Optimization and Synchronization in an Urban Subway Network with Stop-Skip Strategy
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shafahi, Yousef (Supervisor)
Abstract
Stop-skipping and timetable synchronization in a transit network for subway operation are two effective strategies to reduce passengers' total travel time. Most of the current research on the topic does not consider stop-skipping strategy and timetable synchronization simultaneously. This paper proposes a mixed-integer programming model based on passenger smart-card data concerning the trains' capacity to minimize passengers' total waiting time and in-vehicle time and maximize the number of passengers who successfully reach their destination. Since increasing the number of trains, stations, or the study horizon, exponentially increase the size of the problem, seeking practical methods to...
Train timetabling on double track and multiple station capacity railway with useful upper and lower bounds
, Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 24, Issue 6 , 2017 , Pages 3324-3344 ; 10263098 (ISSN) ; Eshghi, K ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Train scheduling has been one of the significant issues in the railway industry in recent years since it has an important role in efficacy of railway infrastructure. In this paper, the timetabling problem of a multiple-tracked railway network is discussed. More specifically, a general model is presented here in which a set of operational and safety requirements is considered. The model handles the trains overtaking in stations and considers the stations' capacity. The objective function is to minimize the total travel time. Unfortunately, the problem is NP-hard, and real-sized problems cannot be solved in an acceptable amount of time. In order to reduce the processing time, we presented some...

Abstract
University (Educational) buildings comprise a considerable contribution of commercial buildings energy consumption. Optimizing operational measures are widely suggested for energy saving in university buildings. Hence, in this study, a bi-level energy-efficient occupancy profile optimization method using a metaheuristic algorithm, integrated with a demand-driven control strategy adjusted with dynamic set-point temperature is proposed to optimize the energy consumption within in a university departmental building. To proceed with the proposed energy saving strategies; first, building's thermal behavior and AHU system performance are identified and modeled through Artificial Neural Networks...

Abstract
Stop-skipping and timetable synchronization are two effective strategies to reduce total passengers’ travel time in a transit network for subway operation. However, the majority of studies conducted on the topic do not consider stop-skipping strategy and timetable synchronization simultaneously. Thus, this article proposes a mixed-integer programming model considering both strategies simultaneously. The model is based on passenger smart-card data concerning the trains’ capacity to minimize total passengers’ waiting time and in-vehicle time and maximize the number of passengers who successfully reach their destination in a specific study horizon. Since increasing the number of trains,...
