Physical properties and applications of clay nanofiller/epoxy nanocomposites

    , Article Physical Properties and Applications of Polymer Nanocomposites ; 2010 , Pages 743-772 ; 9781845696726 (ISBN) Marouf, B. T ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The physical properties including glass transition temperature and permeability behavior of clay-filled epoxies are reviewed in this chapter. There is no consensus in the literature on how nanoclay affects the α-relaxation temperature in epoxy systems. This perhaps rises from the complexity of nanoclay morphology in polymeric resins and the interphase properties since morphology of nanoclay and interphase characteristics are two key parameters to control the glass transition process in epoxy nanocomposites. In addition, the possible existence of several α-transitions in montmorillonite-filled epoxies due to the existence of several relaxation domains may account for the controversial...

Pressure effects on the carbon nano-tube embedded Y-123 superconductors

    , Article Physica B: Condensed Matter ; Volume 487 , 2016 , Pages 42-46 ; 09214526 (ISSN) Dadras, S ; Manivannan, N ; Daadmehr, Vahid ; Tayefeh Rezakhani, A ; Hoon Kim, K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
It has been known that applying pressure and doping carbon nano-tubes (CNTs) can each affect the behavior of high temperature superconductors. Here, bridging these two effects in order to see how they can interplay, we investigate how the dc resistivity varies in both pure and CNT-doped polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7-δ (Y-123) compounds under hydrostatic pressure. We demonstrate that the broadening of the resistivity transition in the CNT-doped samples (of 0.7 wt%) is smaller than the undoped samples. In addition, by increasing applied pressure, the doped samples exhibit a higher rate of the increase of the transition temperatures Tcon and Tcmid than the undoped samples. Interestingly as well,...

Appearance of a new superconducting phase in Gd(Ba2-xPr x)Cu3O7+δ

    , Article Physica Status Solidi C: Conferences ; Volume 1, Issue 7 , 2004 , Pages 1879-1882 ; 16101634 (ISSN) Mohammadizadeh, M. R ; Akhavan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
An unusual hump on the resistivity vs. temperature curve of Gd(Ba 2-xPrx)Cu3O7+δ samples have been observed for particular values of Pr doping. Investigation of the origin of this effect has led to an important result. Based on the Rietveld refinement of the XRD patterns, we have found that the Ba atom substitution at the rare earth site could lead to superconductivity in some parts of the grains at T p ∼ 80-90 K, which appears as a hump on the p(T) curve. Our result is in line with the previously proposed possibility of existence of superconductivity in Pr-123 due to the Ba atom substituted at Pr site. © 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Investigation of CeO2 buffer layer effects on the voltage response of YBCO transition-edge bolometers

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity ; Volume 26, Issue 3 , 2016 ; 10518223 (ISSN) Mohajeri, R ; Nazifi, R ; Wulff, A. C ; Vesaghi, M. A ; Grivel, J. C ; Fardmanesh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The effect on the thermal parameters of superconducting transition-edge bolometers produced on a single crystalline SrTiO3 (STO) substrate with and without a CeO2 buffer layer was investigated. Metal-organic deposition was used to deposit the 20-nm CeO2 buffer layer, whereas RF magnetron sputtering was applied to fabricate 150-nm-thick superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) thin film. The critical transition temperature for both of the YBCO films was 90 K, and the transition width was ∼1.9 K. The bolometers fabricated from these samples were characterized with respect to the voltage phase and amplitude responses, and the results were compared with that of simulations conducted by applying a...

Doping of Sm3Ba5Cu8O19 compound with praseodymium

    , Article Journal of Low Temperature Physics ; Volume 198, Issue 5-6 , 2020 , Pages 252-268 Sandoghchi, M ; Akhavan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2020
    Abstract
An investigation has been carried out on the effects of praseodymium doping in Sm3−xPrxBa5Cu8O19 for different values of x. Results indicate that the transition temperature reduces almost linearly with x. Based on the Abrikosov–Gor’kov pair-breaking theory, it has been concluded that the exchange interaction constant is large (Jex = 110 meV) in the Sm3Ba5Cu8O19 compound. In addition, it seems that the hybridization of Pr4f states with O2p–Cu3d states has an important role in the depression of transition temperature of Sm3−xPrxBa5Cu8O19 for the Pr content < 10%. However, for the higher values of Pr, the two observed plateaus at the transition temperatures of ~ 60 K and ~ 17 K, respectively,...

    Abstract
We have studied the electrical and magnetic properties of normal and superconducting states of RuGd1.6Ce0.4Sr 2Cu2O10-δ (Ru-1222) system, prepared by the standard solid-state reaction technique, with applied magnetic field. The resistivity curves show that at high temperature the system is paramagnetic. At lower temperature, we can observe two magnetic transitions from paramagnetic state to anti-ferromagnetic and from anti-ferromagnetic to ferromagnetic. At room temperature the resistivity of sample shows insulating behavior and superconducting transition occurs at 45 K. Superconducting and magnetic parameters such as superconducting transition temperature Tc, magnetic transition Tirr, have...

Ba@Pr or Pr@Ba in R123 HTSC - To be or not to be SC

    , Article Physica Status Solidi (B) Basic Research ; Volume 241, Issue 6 , 2004 , Pages 1242-1250 ; 03701972 (ISSN) Akhavan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
In spite of the vast amount of experimental and theoretical knowledge accumulated in HTSC, the nature of the interaction driving charge carriers to form Cooper pairs below Tc is still unknown. To elucidate the controversial insulating/SC Pr123, the substitution of Pr at Ba site (Pr@Ba) with Ba at Pr site (Ba@Pr) in R123 is compared and reviewed. This might shed some light on the microscopic origin of HTSC. © 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Rahmani, Khosrow (Author) ; Nategh, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, based on the taking-off and landing of aircraft with GE 21-J85 turbine, the low cycle fatigue (LCF) test for superalloy used in first stage blades is considered. The LCF tests were performed on both coated and uncoated Rene 80 which are used in GE 21-J85 turbine at R = (min/max) = 0, strain rate of 2 10-3 s-1 and 760oC, 871oC and 982oC. To produce specimens, an investment casting method was used so that adequate amount of polycrystalline round bars could be obtained. The specimens were all homogenized and solution treated. After the inspection, some specimens were coated with pack cementation method in CODEP-B powder in H2 atmosphere. The coated and uncoated specimens all...

Hall effect and sign reversal in Gd(Ba2-xNdx)Cu3O7+δ

    , Article Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials ; Volume 320, Issue 13 , 2008 , Pages 1884-1888 ; 03048853 (ISSN) Fallahi, S ; Taheri, M ; Akhavan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
We have investigated the Hall measurement of Gd(Ba2-xNdx)Cu3O7+δ with x=0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2 in a magnetic field of 0-1 T. The nominal samples has been prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction technique. The iodometric titration experiment was carried out for samples. The Rietveld analysis of the X-ray diffraction patterns indicates that samples are mainly single phase. The normal state Hall coefficient behaves as 1/T in all samples. All samples with nominal compositions show single sign reversal with variation of magnetic field and temperature. The Hall resistivity of the samples with x=0 and 0.1 close to the superconducting transition temperature changes its sign with...

    Localization length-doping dependence in GdBa2Cu3-xCrxO7-δ

    , Article Physica C: Superconductivity and its Applications ; Volume 466, Issue 1-2 , 2007 , Pages 157-162 ; 09214534 (ISSN) Bazargan, S ; Javanmard, H ; Akhavan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
The bulk samples of GdBa2Cu3-xCrxO7-δ with x = 0-0.3 have been prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method. Structural phases were determined by powder X-ray diffraction. The XRD and the unit cell parameters were obtained through Rietveld refinement of the XRD data. By increasing the doping, the c parameter decreases and the a parameter increases, and by the nearly fixed b parameter, the orthorhombic phase approaches to the tetragonal phase. The resistivity measurements show a strong effect of doping on suppression of Tc. At the first doping step of x = 0.05, Tc decreases abruptly to 57 K, but by increasing the doping, this rate slows down and becomes nearly linear for higher...

Inhomogeneous and homogeneous swelling behavior of temperature-sensitive poly-(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogels

    , Article Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures ; Volume 27, Issue 3 , 2016 , Pages 324-336 ; 1045389X (ISSN) Mazaheri, H ; Baghani, M ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The aim of this work is to develop a model to continuously predict inhomogeneous and homogeneous swelling behavior of temperature-sensitive poly-(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogels. Employing this model, some benchmark homogeneous problems such as free, unidirectional constrained and biaxial constrained swelling as well as swelling of core-shell structures are investigated. The main advantage of the model is its ability to solve inhomogeneous deformations due to a stable behavior in the vicinity of the phase transition temperature. Therefore, inhomogeneous swelling of a spherical shell on a hard core with application to microfluidics is analytically and numerically investigated for various...

    A new Y-based HTSC with Tc above 100 K

    Abstract
In search of finding the dominant mechanism in high temperature superconductivity phenomena, the Y3Ba5Cu8O18 compound was synthesized through the standard solid-state reaction technique. Characteristic XRD experiment was performed on the samples and was analyzed by the MAUD software refinement program. The analysis results indicate a 358 phase structure with the initial nominal stoichiometry. The electrical resistivity and its behavior under different magnetic field were measured. The electrical resistivity indicates the transition temperature Tc onset = 102 K with transition width ΔTc = 2.4 K. This is the first observation of such a high transition temperature in the Y-based compound....

Comparative Study of Superconductivity in Y112 and Y123

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ehsandoust, Aziz (Author) ; Akhavan, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
After the discovery of high temperature superconductivity in (LaM)2CuO4, different type of cuprate superconductors have been synthesized. Among them, YBCO compounds (e.g. YBa2Cu3O7-δ) have drawn more attention by researchers due to some advantages such as easier conditions of synthesis high quality samples in comparison with the other cuprate superconductors. However, superconductivity properties of these compounds are very sensitive to structural imperfections; hence it is important to study the effect of the microstructure on the behavior of the compounds. The compound YBaCu2Ox (Y112) is one of these microstructures that may form in YBa2Cu3O7-δ (Y123) samples. On the...

Oxygen and Rare Earth Doping Effects on REn 2BanCu2n 2Om Superconductor Compounds

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Sandoghchi, Mohammad (Author) ; Akhavan, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
There are two challenging problems with the physical properties of the recently discovered cuprate, Y3Ba5Cu8O19 δ (Y358): (1) the value of its transition temperature (Tc) and (2) its unknown crystal structure. While some reports argue that Tc of Y358 and its crystal structure are completely different from those of the YBa2Cu3O7 δʹ (Y123) compound, other reports indicate the similarity of both transition temperatures and XRD patterns (or crystal structure) of these materials. It has been suggested that these similarities are due to oxygen deficiency (δ) of Y3Ba5Cu8O19 δ or the decomposition of Y358 to Y123. In this thesis, we address these issues. At first, we have tried to answer the...

Synthesis of SBR/PMMA core/shell latices: the role of initiator and surfactant on particle morphology and instability performance

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 105, Issue 3 , 2007 , Pages 1412-1419 ; 00218995 (ISSN) Moghbeli, M. R ; Mohammadi, N ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Poly(butadiene-stat-styrene)/poly(methylmetacrylate), SBR/PMMA, structural latices were synthesized by using equal moles of different kinds of surfactants: anionic, nonionic, and anionic/nonionic mixture in a two-stage emulsion polymerization. The results indicate that the application of anionic surfactants for the first stage, accompanying sodium persulfate initiator, KPS, for both stages led to core/shell and raspberry morphologies depended upon the hydrophilic lipophilic balance (HLB) of the surfactant. On the other hand, a core/shell structure was observed for structural latices which were synthesized via application of nonionic or anionic/non-ionic mixed surfactants along with...

The effect of chemical pressure in rutheno-cuprates

    , Article Physica C: Superconductivity and its Applications ; Volume 470, Issue 4 , 2010 , Pages 285-290 ; 09214534 (ISSN) Nikseresht, N ; Khajehnezhad, A ; Hadipour, H ; Akhavan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We have studied the effect of negative chemical pressure in the RuGd 1.5(Ce 0.5-xPr x)Sr 2Cu 2O 10-δ with Pr content of 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2. This is also investigated using the bond length results obtained from the Rietveld refinement analysis. The c parameter and cell volume increase with x for 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.15. The width of the resistivity transition also increases with Pr concentration, indicating higher inhomogeneity and oxygen deficiency. The difference in the ionic valences of Pr 3+,4+ and Ce 4+ causing different hole doping, the difference in the ionic radii, and oxygen stoichiometry affect the superconducting transition. The magnetoresistance shows a cusp around 135 K which lies between the...

    Abstract
We produced bifurcated bone-like shape memory implant (BL-SMI) with desirable tooth-root fixation capability by compact-sintering of TiH2–Ni-urea mixture. The primary constituents of the porous product were Ni and Ti. We could adjust the pores' shape, size, and interconnectivity for favorite bone ingrowth by using urea as a space holder. Without urea, we obtained an average porosity of 0.30, and a mean void size of 100 μm. With 70 vol % urea, we got 62% interconnected pores of 400 μm average size. Aging allowed us to tune the austenite-martensite transformation temperatures towards the needed body tissue arouse. Differential scanning calorimetry measured the transformation temperatures....

Effects of rubber curing ingredients and PhenolicResin on mechanical, thermal, and morphological characteristics of rubber/phenolic-resin blends

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 108, Issue 6 , 2008 , Pages 3808-3821 ; 00218995 (ISSN) Derakhshandeh, B ; Shojaei, A ; Faghihi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
This article examines the physical and mechanical characteristics of mixtures of two different synthetic rubbers, namely styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and nitril-butadiene rubber (NBR), with novolac type phenolicresin (PH). According to Taguchi experimental design method, it is shown that the addition of PH increases the crosslinking density of rubber phase probably due to its curative effects. Thermal analysis of the blends indicates that, contrary to NBR/PH blend, thermal stability of SBR/PH blend is dependent on sulfur content due to predominant polysulfidic crosslinks formed in SBR. Slight shift in glass-transition temperature (Tg) of pure SBR and NBR vulcanizates by the addition of PH...

Effect of Ca substitution on crystal structure and superconducting properties of ferromagnetic superconductor RuSr 2-xCa xGd 1.4Ce 0.6Cu 2O 10 -δ

    Abstract
We have investigated the effect of Ca substitution for Sr site on structural, magnetic and superconducting properties of RuSr2 -x CaxGd1.4Ce0.6Cu2O10 -δ system. In this system, the magnetic coupling of RuO 2 and CuO 2 plays an important role in magnetic and superconducting states. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that all samples are single phase and the lattice parameters decrease continuously by increasing Ca content. The onset superconducting transition temperature is found to decrease with Ca substitution. As Ca content increases, rotation of the RuO 6 octahedron increases and RuO(1)Ru angle decreases. These variations strengthen the magnetic moments in the RuO 2 planes. The enhancement...
