A compact model for predicting road traffic noise

    , Article Iranian Journal of Environmental Health Science and Engineering ; Volume 6, Issue 3 , 2009 , Pages 181-186 ; 17351979 (ISSN) Golmohammadi, R ; Abbaspour, M ; Nassiri, P ; Mahjub, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Noise is one of the most important sources of pollution in the metropolitan areas. The recognition of road traffic noise as one of the main sources of environmental pollution has led to develop models that enable us to predict noise level from fundamental variables. Traffic noise prediction models are required as aids in the design of roads and sometimes in the assessment of existing, or envisaged changes in, traffic noise conditions. The purpose of this study was to design a prediction road traffic noise model from traffic variables and conditions of transportation in Iran. This paper is the result of a research conducted in the city of Hamadan with the ultimate objective of setting up a...

The effect of transportation and safety attitudes, personality, and lifestyle on vehicle type choice: A case study of Tehran

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 28, Issue 1A , 2021 , Pages 138-155 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Mohammadi, A ; Kermanshah, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2021
    Abstract
In recent years, researchers have paid particular attention to safety, air pollution, and energy consumption, which are all affected by vehicle type. The primary objective of this study is to achieve a thorough understanding of the relationships of transportation attitudes, safety attitudes, personality, and lifestyle with vehicle type for the first time in Iran, as a developing country. For this purpose, an interview questionnaire was designed, and 740 participants were interviewed in Tehran. Vehicle types are categorized into seven groups: mini, compact, medium, heavy, Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), pickup, and motorcycle. In the first stage, factor analysis was employed to identify the...

Controlling longitudinal safe distance between vehicles

    , Article Promet - Traffic - Traffico ; Volume 21, Issue 5 , 2009 , Pages 303-310 ; 03535320 (ISSN) Sadat Hoseini, S. M ; Fathi, M ; Vaziri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Controlling the safe distances between vehicles on freeways can be used to prevent many accidents. In this research, image-processing techniques have been used to develop an online system that calculates the longitudinal distances between vehicles. This system facilitates controlling safe distances between vehicles without the need for high technology devices. Our approach is real-time and simple, but efficient operations have been used to reduce the image occlusion problem. The main concept of this system is using simple, quick, and effective algorithms for calculating the position of each vehicle in each image. In this way, traffic parameters like speed and distances between vehicles can...

Train timetabling on double track and multiple station capacity railway with useful upper and lower bounds

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 24, Issue 6 , 2017 , Pages 3324-3344 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Oroojlooy Jadid, A ; Eshghi, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Train scheduling has been one of the significant issues in the railway industry in recent years since it has an important role in efficacy of railway infrastructure. In this paper, the timetabling problem of a multiple-tracked railway network is discussed. More specifically, a general model is presented here in which a set of operational and safety requirements is considered. The model handles the trains overtaking in stations and considers the stations' capacity. The objective function is to minimize the total travel time. Unfortunately, the problem is NP-hard, and real-sized problems cannot be solved in an acceptable amount of time. In order to reduce the processing time, we presented some...

Application of a maintenance management model for iranian railways based on the markov chain and probabilistic dynamic programming

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 16, Issue 1 A , 2009 , Pages 87-97 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Shafahi, Y ; Hakhamaneshi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Railway managers have a strong economic incentive to minimize track maintenance costs, while maintaining safety standards and providing adequate service levels to train operators. The objective of this study is to apply a procedure for making optimal maintenance decisions in Iranian Railways. This study consists of two parts. First, a cumulative damage model, based on a Markov process, is applied to model the deterioration of the track. For this reason, tracks are categorized into six classes, so that those tracks with similar traffic loads and geographical location are collected into one class. The track survey data from 215 blocks (4,228 km) of the ten divisions of the Iranian Railway...
