The effects of nonlinearities on the vibration of viscoelastic sandwich plates

    , Article International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics ; Vol. 62 , 2014 , Pages 41-57 ; ISSN: 00207462 Mahmoudkhani, S ; Haddadpour, H ; Navazi, H. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The nonlinear free and forced bending vibration of sandwich plates with incompressible viscoelastic core is investigated under the effects of different source of nonlinearities. For the core constrained between stiffer layers, the transverse shear strains, as well as the rotations are assumed to be moderate. The linear and quadratic displacement fields are also adopted for the in-plane and out-of-plane displacements of the core, respectively. The assumption of moderate transverse strains requires a nonlinear constitutive equation which is obtained from a single-integral nonlinear viscoelastic model using the assumed order of magnitudes for linear strains and rotations. The 5th-order method...

Aeroelastic instability of aircraft composite wings in an incompressible flow

    , Article Composite Structures ; Volume 83, Issue 1 , 2008 , Pages 93-99 ; 02638223 (ISSN) Haddadpour, H ; Kouchakzadeh, M. A ; Shadmehri, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The aeroelastic stability of an aircraft wing modeled as an anisotropic composite thin-walled beam in an incompressible flow is investigated. The wing is built-up as a single-cell box beam whose central point is noncoincident with the mid-chord of the profile. The effects of material anisotropy, transverse shear, warping inhibition, nonuniform torsional model and rotary inertia are considered in the structural model. The unsteady incompressible aerodynamics based on Wagner's function is used to determine the aerodynamic loads. The effects of the offset between reference axis and the mid-chord ("a" parameter), fiber orientation and sweep angle on stability boundary are considered, their...

Curvilinear fiber optimization tools for aeroelastic design of composite wings

    Abstract
The aeroelastic design of composite wings modeled as thin-walled beams is investigated through the use of curvilinear fiber. The structural model considers non-classical effects such as transverse shear, warping restraint, rotary inertia, nonuniform torsional model and also aerodynamic loads based on Wagner's function. In this paper, a linear spanwise variation of the fiber orientation resulting in a variable-stiffness structure is used to optimize the wing for maximum aeroelastic instability speed purpose, while manufacturing constraints are incorporated. Numerical results indicate improvements of aeroelastic stability of variable-stiffness wings over conventional, constant-stiffness ones

    Abstract
Free vibration analysis of a transversely stiffened circular thin hollow cylinder made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) is analytically evaluated. Functionally graded materials are inhomogeneous composites which are usually made from a mixture of metal and ceramic. The gradient compositional variation of the constituents from one surface to the other provides an elegant solution to the problem of high transverse shear stresses induced when two dissimilar materials with large differences in material properties are bonded. In this paper, application of an FGM made of two different materials is investigated by applying Ritz method. While cylinder is assumed to be thin, strain energy...

    Abstract
Structural behavior of ring stiffened thick walled cylinders made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) is investigated in this paper. Functionally graded materials are inhomogeneous composites which are usually made from a mixture of metal and ceramic. The gradient compositional variation of the constituents from one surface to the other provides an elegant solution to the problem of high transverse shear stresses that are induced when two dissimilar materials with large differences in material properties are bonded. FGM formation of the cylinder is modeled by power-law exponent and the variation of characteristics is supposed to be in radial direction. A finite element formulation is...

Three-dimensional stress analysis of structures in instability conditions using nonlinear displacement-based and hybrid-mixed quadrilaterals based on SaS formulation

    Abstract
In this paper, the three-dimensional (3D) stress analysis of plate-type structures in instability conditions is presented. The displacement-based and hybrid-mixed four-node quadrilateral elements are developed taking the advantages of the sampling surfaces (SaS) method. The SaS formulation is based on considering inside the plate N not equally spaced SaS parallel to the middle surface to specify the displacements of these surfaces as primary plate unknowns. The displacements, strains and stresses are assumed to be distributed through the thickness using Lagrange polynomials of degree N–1 that lead to a well-set higher-order plate theory. The locations of SaS are based on the use of Chebyshev...

    Abstract
The finite deformation displacement-based and hybrid-mixed four-node quadrilateral elements using the sampling surfaces (SaS) technique are developed. The SaS formulation is based on choosing inside the plate N not equally spaced SaS parallel to the middle surface to introduce the displacements of these surfaces as basic plate unknowns. Such choice of unknowns with the consequent use of Lagrange polynomials of degree N–1 in the thickness direction permits the presentation of the plate formulation in a very compact form. The SaS are located at only Chebyshev polynomial nodes that allows one to minimize uniformly the error due to the Lagrange interpolation. To circumvent shear locking and have...

    Abstract
Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are inhomogeneous composites which are usually made of a mixture of metals and ceramics. Properties of these kinds of materials vary continuously and smoothly from a ceramic surface to a metallic surface in a specified direction of the structure. The gradient compositional variation of the constituents from one surface to the other provides an elegant solution to the problem of high transverse shear stresses that are induced when two dissimilar materials with large differences in material properties are bonded. FGMs have extracted much attention as advanced structural materials in recent years. In this paper, free vibration of a rotating FGM cantilever...
