Effect of EPB tunnelling on surface settlement

    Abstract
Settlement is one of the most important effects of tunnelling. In order to minimize this effect, it is necessary to arrange for circumstances to keep the strain and stress state of undisturbed soil within a tight limit. To achieve this, it is common nowadays to use closed face pressurized shields such as EPB TBMs. In this type of shield, face stability and ground settlement control is maintained by pressurizing the tunnel face with adjustment of cutter head thrust and muck removal discharge. In this paper, numerical modeling of excavation of twin tunnels in Tabriz subway is addressed with respect to the effect of EPB tunnelling in settlement control. Settlement and lining thrust are...

    Abstract
The use of public transportation in metropolises has developed due to the increase in the population and the need for within-city transportation. Among public transportation service, the use of city subways has attracted more public interest due to its speed, safety, and matching with the environment. Also, one solution for reducing the between-city transit distances, decreasing the accidents and above all, saving the time of the travel is building tunnels and underground lines. Design and construction of underground structures (tunnels),in comparison with surfacestructures, has more complex conditions and considerations that require special studies. One challenging problem fortunnel...

3D numerical investigation of the effects of driving of the new mechanized tunnel on existing segmental linings and ground surface settlements - a case study: Shiraz metro line 2

    Abstract
Subway metro systems are one of the most efficient modes of mass transportation, especially in heavily populated areas. A series of 3D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) has been carried out to investigate the interaction between mechanized twin tunnels excavated beneath the highly congested streets of Shiraz (Iran). Firstly, the reference numerical model has been verified using the measured data of surface settlement control pins. The effects of driving of the new closed shield tunnel on the evolution of stress fields in the existing segmental lining as well as the ground surface settlements in the reference numerical model have been then quantified. Lastly, the effects of influencing factors...

Unsupported advance length in tunnels constructed using New Austrian Tunnelling Method and ground surface settlement

    Abstract
Tunnels constructed using New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) are always based on certain round (unsupported) advance lengths, after which, the temporary lining is placed. The settlement of the ground surface resulting from such construction is of high significance in design and practice. The existing data in this respect, however, is scarce. It is the aim of this paper to propose a semi-analytical procedure based on three-dimensional finite element analyses to predict the maximum surface settlement of the ground in NATM tunnels under different combinations of tunnel diameter, overburden depth, round length and soil and lining properties. The comparison of the results with three case...
