Effect of operating conditions on the performance of a PEM fuel cell

, Article International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer ; Volume 144 , 2019 ; 00179310 (ISSN) Askaripour, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
In this study, a two-phase flow model based on species transport, energy, and electrochemical equations was developed for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The influences of heat sources and sinks, and water transport inside the fuel cell were also taken into account. In this regard, the effect of the operating conditions including cell temperature and pressure, anode and cathode inlet humidity, and anode and cathode stoichiometric ratios on the fuel cell performance was investigated. The simulation results show that inlet humidity and stoichiometric ratio of the anode side, cell pressure and temperature, and distribution of the heat sources and sinks are crucial factors...

Theoretical comparative assessment of single- and two-phase models for natural convection heat transfer of Fe3O4/ethylene glycol nanofluid in the presence of electric field

    Abstract
Natural convective heat transfer of Fe3O4/ethylene glycol nanofluids around the platinum wire as a heater in the absence and presence of the high electric field was investigated, numerically. The control volume finite element method was employed for the numerical simulation. Effects of the flow model, the volume fraction of nanoparticles, Rayleigh number, and the electric field intensity on the natural heat transfer coefficient (NHTC) of nanofluid were studied. Simulation results of single-phase and two-phase flow models showed that the two-phase model could better predict experimental data than the single-phase model due to take into account the velocity of each phase in the mixture. The...

    Abstract
Airlift systems (ALS) are widely used in various fields such as petroleum and oil extracting industries. As gas-liquid two phase flow is the main part of the flow through these systems, the analysis of such systems accompanies with problems of two phase flow modeling. However, exergy analysis could be a simple method for modeling of airlift systems. In the present study, an analytical model based on thermodynamic principles has been implemented on each phase to analyze the performance of airlift systems. The experimental data were collected at a large scale multiphase flow test rig for the airlift pump with 6m height and diameter of 50 mm. Finally, irreversibility terms, energy destruction,...

    Abstract
A novel technique for upscaling of detailed geological reservoir descriptions is presented. The technique aims at reducing both numerical dispersion and homogenization error, generated due to incorporating a coarse computational grid and assigning effective permeability to coarse grid blocks respectively. In particular we consider implicit-pressure explicit-saturation (IMPES) scheme where homogenization error impacts the accuracy of the coarse grid solution of the pressure equation. To reduce the homogenization error, we employ the new vorticity-based gridding that generates a non-uniform coarse grid with high resolution at high vorticity zones. In addition, to control numerical dispersion,...

Numerical Modeling of Film Condensation in the Plate-Fin Heat Exchanger Used in the CO2 Capturing and Storage Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khorampoor, Nima (Author) ; Saeedi, Mohammad Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to the wide application of plate-fin heat exchangers in various industries such as the petrochemical industry, aerospace industry, air conditioning systems, separation and liquefaction of gases, especially natural gas, boiling, condensation, and transportation industries, proper design of these heat exchangers is necessary. Most of the previous researches in the field of heat exchanger modeling has been done in single-phase mode. The two-phase modeling has been performed, often thermodynamically, and the effects of turbulence and surface tension have been ignored. Thus, in the present study, numerical modeling of the two-phase plate-fin heat exchanger is presented. In this project,...

Effects of microhydrophobic porous layer on water distribution in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells

    , Article Journal of Fuel Cell Science and Technology ; Vol. 11, Issue. 1 , 2014 ; ISSN: 1550-624X Ahmadi, F ; Roshandel, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Performance of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) at high current densities is limited to transport reactants and products. Furthermore, large amounts of water are generated and may be condensed due to the low temperature of the PEMFC. Development of a two-phase flow model is necessary in order to predict water flooding and its effects on the PEMFC performance. In this paper, a multiphase mixture model (M2) is used, accurately, to model two-phase transport in porous media of a PEMFC. The cathode side, which includes channel, gas diffusion layer (GDL), microporous layer (MPL), and catalyst layer (CL), is considered as the computational domain. A multidomain approach has been used...

Mechanistic Investigation of Enhanced Oil Recovery by Engineered Water Using Computational Fluid Dynamics at Pore Scale

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Namaee Ghasemi, Arman (Author) ; Ayatollahi, Shahaboddin (Supervisor) ; Mahani, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Despite the proven advantage of the engineered water flooding technique, a coherent and mechanistic understanding of the fundamental phenomena occurring at pore scale is lacking. Most of the available simulation models have a phenomenological approach and have limited predictive capability. One of the key questions is how to justify and relate large (Darcy) scale observations to effects and phenomena that essentially occur at much smaller scales (i.e. pore and molecular level). Furthermore, two-phase flow dynamics and the effect of complex interplay between wettability, capillary number, and ions dispersion in a heterogeneous porous medium on the trapping and mobilization of oil at pore...
