Investigating the Behaviour of Some Kind of Fibre-reinforced Concrete

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alaei Mahabadi, Alireza (Author) ; Khonsari, Vahid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
While there are many advantages associated with concrete, including high compressive strength, durability and so forth, on the contrary, it has several disadvantages which may make engineers somewhat reluctant to use it. These include low tensile strength, high brittleness, low resistance to impact, large dimensions of structural cross sections, etc. In recent years, there have been many attempts to surmount these disadvantages by various means such as adding pozzolans, using FRPs, fibres, etc. In this project, the effects of using a special type of high strength steel fibre is studied. In order to investigate the effect of this fibre on the compressive behavior of concrete, 30 cylindrical...

Investigation of Heat Treatment on Microstructure of Bulk Metallic Glass By Molecular Dynamics

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Naseri Karimi, Vahid (Author) ; Ashouri, Hossein (Supervisor) ; Tavakoli, Rouhulla (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Metallic glasses have been applied in industry owing to their attractive mechanical, physical, and chemical properties. such as high electrical resistivity, soft-type superconductivity, good magnetic softness, high strength and large elastic strain. These unusual properties make the amorphous alloys potentially useful for various applications, which originate from the intrinsic random atomic configuration. but their plasticity is low and this disadvantage limites their applicable range as a engineering material. In this study we try to improve plasticity of metallic glasses by structural rejuvenation. Structural rejuvenation in metallic glasses by a thermal process (i.e. through recovery...

Environmental Impact of Seawater on GGBFS-Based Alkali-Activated Concrete

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Safavi, Alireza (Author) ; Toufigh, Vahab (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study seeks to compare the effect of curing conditions in the sea, coast, and middle of the island environment on five mix designs of alkali-activated concrete (AAC) based on ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and fly ash (FA) and the effect of the ratio of sodium silicate (SS) to sodium hydroxide (SH) and alkali activated solutions (AAMS) to the binder on mechanical properties. The compressive strength and load-deflection test was conducted to obtain uniaxial compressive strengths (UCS), modulus of elasticity ("E" _"S" ), elastic and ultimate strain, and dissipated energy. The most significant decrease in strength was observed in the coastal area and the sea. Also, the...

    Abstract
This study aims to 3D print titanium alloy constructs incorporating gradient of porosities, from the fully dense core to the porous outer surface. Gradient porous specimens were prepared using selective laser melting (SLM). Fully dense specimens fabricated by SLM were used as the control group. Characterization of samples was done using X-ray tomography, uniaxial compression testing, and optical and scanning electron microscopes. The biocompatibility of fabricated samples was investigated using human periodontal ligament stem cells via assessment of cell attachment, viability, and proliferation by direct and indirect assays. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test....

Effect of pore geometry and loading direction on deformation mechanism of rapid prototyped scaffolds

    , Article Acta Materialia ; Volume 60, Issue 6-7 , 2012 , Pages 2778-2789 ; 13596454 (ISSN) Amirkhani, S ; Bagheri, R ; Zehtab Yazdi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Rapid prototyping is a promising technique for producing tissue engineering scaffolds due to its capacity to generate predetermined forms and structures featuring distinct pore architectures. The objective of this study is to investigate the influences of different pore geometries and their orientation with respect to the compressive loading direction on mechanical responses of scaffolds. Plastic models of scaffolds with cubic and hexagonal unit cells were fabricated by three-dimensional (3-D) printing. An in situ imaging technique was utilized to study the progressive compressive deformation of the scaffold models. In both cubic and hexagonal geometries, organized buckling patterns relevant...

    Abstract
Al6063 powder was subjected to severe plastic deformation via high-energy mechanical milling to prepare ultrafine-grained (UFG) aluminium alloy. Uniaxial compression test at various temperatures between 300 and 450 °C and strain rates between 0.01 and 1 s-1 was carried out to evaluate hot workability of the material. Microstructural studies were performed by EBSD and TEM. The average activation energy and strain rate sensitivity of the hot deformation process were determined to be 280 kJ mol-1 and 0.05, respectively. The deformation temperature and applied strain rate significantly affected the grain structure of UFG Al alloy. A finer grain structure was obtained at lower temperatures and...

Study of behavior of concrete under axial and triaxial compression

    , Article ACI Materials Journal ; Volume 114, Issue 4 , 2017 , Pages 619-629 ; 0889325X (ISSN) Toufigh, V ; Jafarian Abyaneh, M ; Jafari, K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this investigation, polymer concrete (PC) with three different epoxy resin contents, ordinary cement concrete (OCC), lightweight concrete (LWC), and lime-mortar soil (LMS) have been studied under uniaxial and triaxial compression tests to determine their mechanical behavior by measuring axial stress-strain and volumetric strain versus axial strain curves. According to the results, PC showed higher strength, ductility, and energy absorption than that of OCC and LWC. Then, nonlinear finite element analysis (NFEA) was implemented to predict the experimental results using hierarchical single-surface (HISS) failure criterion and disturbed state concept (DSC) to capture the elastoplastic...

    Abstract
Hot deformation behavior of Al6063 alloy produced by direct powder extrusion was studied by means of uniaxial compression test in the temperature range between 300 and 450°C and strain rate range between 0.01 and 1s -1. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were utilized to study the microstructure of the material before and after the hot deformation. The microstructure of the extruded alloy consisted of elongated grains within a subgrain structure and small grains free of low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs). An equiaxed duplex microstructure consisting of large substructured grains and fine grains separated by high angle grain boundaries...
