An Analytical Approach to Monge’s Problem

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rezaei, Nima (Author) ; Ranjbar Motlagh, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Monge’s problem was solved by Brenier in 1990. In general, the problem remained unresolved for a long time. some of its cases were solved by assumptions, but the general case and its analytical solution for the first time by Ian Bernier The French mathematician was introduced. He wrote his famous article Solved this nonlinear problem with technical assumptions. With the help of convex analysis and fundamental theorems in functions with vector values, he proved the existence and unity of this nonlinear problem. Monge’s problem, also known as optimal transport, suggests whether a stablesized mapping can be done by having two probabilistic spaces and one cost function. (Inverted image of any...

Introducing a Set of Material Strain Measures in Non-Linear Kinematics of Micropolar Continuum Mechanics and Determining their Time Rates

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ebrahimi, Mehran (Author) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The concept of generalized strains is a well-established subject in the classical continuum mechanics. The characteristics and various applications of the generalized strains have been the point of interest of many researchers in the classical continuum mechanics. The aim of this thesis is the introduction of generalized strains in the micropolar theory, as a non-classical continuum theory. A set of generalized strains is suggested for the deformation of macro-elements. Moreover, a set of generalized strains is proposed for the micro-structures. Since the rate of strains possesses a significant importance in the constitutive equations of nonlinear analysis of solids, expressions for the rate...

Estimating Stopping Time Using Function Approximation Algorithms in Reinforcement Learning

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Daei Naby, Ali (Author) ; Alishahi, Kasra (Supervisor) ; Haji Mirsadeghi, Mir omid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
We study the expected value of stopping times in stochastic processes. Since there is no rigorous solution for computing stopping times in many processes, our approach is based on estimation using well-known methods in the Reinforcement Learning literature. The primary method in this research is the temporal difference algorithm. With some modifications, we can study the role of some state features in determining the stopping time. Moreover, without a complicated mathematical analysis, we can find functions closely enough to the goal function.Furthermore, we compare our proposed algorithm to the well-known regression methods and show our algorithm's advantages and disadvantages. The primary...

Dunford-Taylor integral and the isotropic tensor valued functions having the commutative property with their tensor argument

    , Article Advanced Materials Research, 16 September 2011 through 18 September 2011 ; Volume 433-440 , September , 2012 , Pages 3308-3314 ; 10226680 (ISSN) ; 9783037853191 (ISBN) Ebrahimi, M ; Asghari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Isotropic tensor valued functions of tensor arguments play an important role in the formulation of the equations governing the behavior of solid materials in the field of continuum mechanics. When the tensor argument is non-symmetric, the complexity and the difficulty in dealing with the tensor functions are high. In this work, the issue of expressing an isotropic tensor valued tensor function of a non-symmetric tensor argument is attention by utilizing the Dunford-Taylor integral. An important subclass of the isotropic tensor functions is considered with the commutative property

ON-line learning of a Persian spoken dialogue system using real training data

    , Article 10th International Conference on Information Sciences, Signal Processing and their Applications, ISSPA 2010, 10 May 2010 through 13 May 2010 ; May , 2010 , Pages 133-136 ; 9781424471676 (ISBN) Habibi, M ; Sameti, H ; Setareh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
The first spoken dialogue system is developed for the Persian language is introduced. This is a ticket reservation system with Persian ASR and NLU modules. The focus of the paper is on learning the dialogue management module. In this work, real on-line training data are used during the learning process. For on-line learning, the effect of the variations of discount factor (γ) on the learning speed is investigated as the second contribution of the research. The optimal values for γ were found and the variation pattern of the action-value function (Q) in the learning process was obtained. A probabilistic policy for selecting actions is used in this work for the first time instead of greedy...

An efficient numerical algorithm for stability testing of fractional-delay systems

    , Article ISA Transactions ; Volume 48, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 32-37 ; 00190578 (ISSN) Merrikh Bayat, F ; Karimi Ghartemani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
This paper presents a numerical algorithm for BIBO stability testing of a certain class of the so-called fractional-delay systems. The characteristic function of the systems under consideration is a multi-valued function of the Laplace variable s which is defined on a Riemann surface with finite number of Riemann sheets where the origin is a branch point. The stability analysis of such systems is not straightforward because there is no universally applicable analytical method to find the roots of the characteristic equation on the right half-plane of the first Riemann sheet. The proposed method is based on the Rouche's theorem which provides the number of the zeros of a given function in a...
