Abstract
The aim of this research is the optimisation of full-toroidal continuously variable transmission (CVT) in conjunction with the fixed ratio (FR) mechanism, while the optimisation objective is to minimise fuel consumption (FC) of the vehicle in the new European driving cycle. After the dynamic analysis of the power train, a computer model is developed to simulate contact between CVT elements and consequently calculate its efficiency. Then an algorithm is presented to calculate FC of the vehicle in the driving cycle. Then, an optimisation using particle swarm optimisation on the CVT geometry and FR mechanism (which is embedded between CVT and final drive) is carried out to minimise FC. It is...

Abstract
This paper presents a general integrated procedure of fabricating a Hybrid Electric Motorcycle (HEM). Firstly, a simple model designed and simulated using ADVISOR2002 and the proposed model is exported to MATLAB/SIMULINK. Secondly, the controller schematic and its optimized control strategy are described. In addition, the ratings of the components including the batteries, electric motor, and internal combustion engine (ICE) are calculated based on the design. A 125 cc ICE motorcycle is selected for conversion to HEM. A brushless DC (BLDC) motor assembled in front wheel as accessory propellant. The nominal powers are 8.2 kW at 8500 rpm and 500 W for the ICE and BLDC respectively. The original...

Abstract
The development of an efficient hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) platform needs an optimal design of its powertrain layout. This study is concerned with parallel HEVs (PHEVs) equipped with continuous transmission. First, different types of continuous transmissions, including continuously variable transmission (CVT), power-split CVT (PS-CVT) and multi-fixed ratio PS-CVT (MF-CVT), are discussed and their simulation models are presented. Also, various combinations of these continuous transmissions with PHEV configurations (namely, pre-transmission and posttransmission configurations) are introduced. Then, for a given PHEV model, several powertrain layouts resulting from combining the considered...

Abstract
In this research a computer model based on elasto hydrodynamic fluid film lubrication is developed in order to calculate the torque transmission efficiency of a half-toroidal CVT variator. Validation of this model is verified by comparing the experimental and the model results. Sensitivity of torque transmission efficiency to eleven parameters is investigated. These parameters are: dimensionless roller curvature, aspect ratio, half cone angle, fluid viscosity index, pressure constant for Roelands model, input rotational velocity, absolute viscosity at atmospheric pressure, Young modulus of disks and power rollers, Poisson ratio of disks and power rollers, number of power rollers and variator...

Abstract
In this research a model is developed which calculates the torque transmission efficiency of a half-toroidal CVT as a function of variator geometry, gear ratio and input torque. The different criteria which are considered to be important in a half toroidal CVT performance are torque transmission efficiency, variator weight, roller fatigue life and bearing torque loss. Variation of geometrical characteristics such as roller curvature, number of power rollers, aspect ratio and half cone angle affect these criteria in different ways. Therefore, in order to find the optimal quantity for each geometrical parameter an optimization problem should be developed. The objective function of this...

Abstract
The objective of this research is geometrical and kinematical optimization of full-toroidal continuously variable transmission (CVT) in order to achieve high power transmission efficiency and low mass. At first, a dynamic analysis is performed for the system. A computer model is developed to simulate elastohydrodynamic (EHL) contact between disks and roller and consequently, calculate CVT efficiency. The validity of EHL model is investigated by comparing output of this model and experimental data. Geometrical parameters are obtained by means of Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm, while the optimization objective is to maximize CVT efficiency and minimize its mass. The algorithm is run for...

Abstract
This paper aims to establish a control strategy for parallel hybrid electric vehicles equipped with full-toroidal Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). First, the advantages of CVT are elucidated. Afterwards, a modified control strategy on the base of Baseline static Control Strategy (BCS) is proposed. Employing this strategy, in some moments, the engine operates in its fuel-optimal point to decrease the vehicle Fuel Consumption (FC). It is demonstrated that the modifications in BCS are applicable using a CVT as the power train. In order to investigate the implemented modification, an optimization on the proposed control strategy and BCS in SC03 driving cycle is accomplished and then,...

Abstract
Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have been developed as a promising way to decrease the fuel consumption and emissions of conventional vehicles. Although the noise emission of HEVs is generally lower than that of conventional vehicles, it is still an issue, especially in urban transportation. In this paper, a power management strategy is developed to minimize the annoying noise of the engine for an HEV. This is a modified version of the strategy that was originally established based on the speed ratio of continuously variable transmission (CVT) as the control parameter (CVT-based strategy). The engine combustion noise is assessed using the experimental data of the in-cylinder pressure. Also,...
