, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sabeghi, Milad (Author) ; Jahangir, Amir Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today road accidents take the lives of millions of people on a yearly basis through the world. Also, numerous attempts have been proposed to increase safety on the roads. Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) is a subclass of mobile ad hoc networks (MANET); the main goal of which is to increase the safety and efficiency of road traffics and trips. However, like other networks, routing protocols are one of the most important parts of VANET. But, due to the unique characteristics of VANET (high mobility, short radio coverage area, etc.), the process of data dissemination is a more challenging task than other networks. Therefore, the need for efficient, reliable and safe routing protocols which can...

Improvement of AODV Routing Protocol in VANETs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kadkhoda Mohammad Mosaferi, Kaveh (Author) ; Hemmatyar, Ali Mohammad Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) can prepare scalable and cost effective solutions for applications such as traffic monitoring and vehicle safety. However, VANETs often experience congestion quicker than wired networks, leading to high end to end delay. The optimization method was proposed to improve the end to end delay of Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol in VANETs. It was shown that Last-In-First-Out with FrontDrop (LIFO-FD) queuing system for AODV routing protocol performs better in high traffic periods in term of end to end delay. The simulation studies were performed on the impact of queuing systems on end to end delay of AODV routing protocol in VANETs. The...

Design and Analysis of Authentication Protocols in Vehicular ad-hoc Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kazemi Dizaj, Mitra (Author) ; Salmasizadeh, Mahmoud (Supervisor) ; Mohajeri, Javad (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Design of anonymous authentication scheme is one of the most important challenges in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANET). Most of the existing schemes have high computational and communication overhead and they do not meet security requirements. Recently, Azees et al. have introduced an Efficient Anonymous Authentication with Conditional Privacy-Preserving (EAAP) scheme for VANET and claimed that it is secure. We show that this protocol is vulnerable against replay attack, impersonation attack and message modification attack. Also, we show that the messages sent by a vehicle are linkable. Therefore, an adversary can easily track the vehicles. In addition, it is shown that vehicles face with...

Privacy Consideration for Trustworthy Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khomejani, Shabnam (Author) ; Movaghar, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
For increasing safety of driving, intelligent vehicles in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) communicate with each other by sending announcements. The existence of a system that guarantees the trustworthiness of these announcements seems necessary. The proposed system generating announcements should be preserved from internal and external attackers that attempt to send fake messages. In this thesis, we use a group-based endorsement mechanism based on threshold signatures against internal attackers. We choose NTRUSign as a public key cryptosystem for implementing the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) for decreasing signature generation and verification times. This approach optimizes the network...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taghavi Nasrabadi, Afshin (Author) ; Ghanbari, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the recent years, emerging vehicular ad hoc networks offer a wide variety of applications, including safety, convenience and entertainment. One of the beneficial applications in these fields is video streaming. However, according to the features like high mobility and loss of links, establishment of video streaming which requires stringent Quality of Service is a daunting task. In this thesis, the goal is introducing approaches in two levels, one for resilient video coding and the other one for network routing. For resilient video coding, the concentration is on the scalable video coding, which supports various applications for users with different requirements. The introduced approach...

An Approach for Security Improvement in VANETs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ranjbar Bafqi, Vahid (Author) ; Hemmatyar, Ali Mohammad Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Vehicular ad hoc networks are types of mobile ad hoc networks in which each automobile acts as an intelligent node and can have links to other automobiles and with equipments that are beside the road. The main difference between vehicular ad hoc networks and mobile ad hoc networks are in terms of higher speed of their components, extent, span and scale. One of the main concerns about designing vehicular ad hoc networks is users' security and protection of their privacy policy. Althoug a lot of protocols have been suggested for improvement of securities in these networks up to now, many research challenges regarding users' security and their privacy have been left and need to be considered...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Etemadirad, Neshat (Author) ; Ashtiani, Farid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we propose an analytical model in order to evaluate the maximum stable throughput for unicast services in Vehicular Ad hoc NETworks (VANETs). In this respect, we employ two queueing networks in order to model the mobility patterns of the vehicles as well as the multi-hop packet transmission scenario. In the proposed model, we map the features of IEEE 802.11, as well as the details of multi-hop packet transmission, regarding the dynamic status of vehicles, onto suitable parameters of the queueing networks. In our modeling approach, we take the details of MAC and routing schemes into account by classifying the vehicles based on their mobility patterns and considering...

A New Cooperative Message Authentication Scheme in Vehicular ad-hoc Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sarencheh, Amir Reza (Author) ; Aref, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Salmasizadeh, Mahmoud (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Real-time applications play a significant role in the area of VANET, and are mainly required for these kinds of networks. On the other hand, when the number of messages received by vehicles increases in the network, then the applied computation load becomes extremely high and consequently, delay on the message authentication process significantly increases. This thesis, is presented with the aim of introducing a novel cooperative message authentication (CMA) scheme for VANET, the main purpose of which is alleviating the computation load on vehicles while verifying messages by using two-part identity-based signature. The scheme enables vehicles to verify only a limited number of the total...

Improving Privacy in IoV Using Fog Computing

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yavari, Morteza (Author) ; Hemmatyar, Ali Mohammad Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Along with the emergence of the smart city concept and the increasing demand for a wide range of vehicles, the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has attracted a lot of attention by providing numerous benefits including vehicle accident warning, reducing pollution levels and traffic congestion, as well as entertainment services. Furthermore, IoV offers various services combining Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) and IoT in smart cities. However, these types of networks are exposed to a variety of security and privacy risks due to the wireless nature, because the sensitive message is transmitted through an insecure channel in the IoV-based smart city environment, therefore, it is necessary to...

    Abstract
Security is an important issue in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs),which are mainly aimed at enhancing safety. Analysis of security mechanisms can help design and implement secure communication establishment methods in such networks. Formal verification is an analysis approach, with the purpose of proving the correctness of a system based on defined precise assumptions. Formal verification is applicable to a vast range of systems, such as time-critical reactive systems. Timed formal verification of cryptographic protocols is a subject that has gained a lot of attention in the recent two decades. The TESLA broadcast authentication protocol is on one hand an efficient, standardized method...

    Improving Routing Protocols in VANETs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadi, Arman (Author) ; Hemmatyar, Ali Mohammad Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Vehicular ad-hoc networks are forms of mobile ad-hoc networks in which every vehicle can be smart and communicate with surrounding cars and roadside units. The main differences between these networks and mobile ad-hoc networks are high mobility and rapid changes in network connectivity as well as higher scalability and extensibility. The main goal in the vehicular ad-hoc networks is to increase safety for both the passengers and the driver. Since there are high mobility and rapid changes in network connectivity in such networks, there may be no path from a specific source to a destination, so design of new protocols to guarantee parameters such as reliability and less overhead would be...

    Congestion Control in VANETs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zarazvand, Farid (Author) ; Hemmatyar, Ali Mohammad Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) is a subclass of Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET), which provides us ability to communicate between moving vehicles. VANET has been developed as a standard means of communication for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to improve traffic safety and efficiency while providing internet access on the move. Congestion control is a challenging subject in VANETs primarily due to the shared nature of the wireless channel and frequent changes of the network topology. Inefficient congestion control causes periodical safety messages to be lost and introduces latency in threat modelling at the application layer. There are two methods to overcome this problem. First, based...

Improving GPSR Routing Protocols in VANETs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khoshyari Kakavand, Daryosh (Author) ; Hemmatyar, Ali Mohammad Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) is a special class of Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET). VANET uses vehicles to make a network between them. In this network, vehicles are equipped by wireless communications devices and many onboard sensors which can disseminate sensed data to the network. Drivers can select a road with low density to drive using this data. Moreover, this data can be used for traffic management system. In this network communication between vehicles is very fragile by rapid changes of topology, fast moving of nodes and other features which make network performance disrupt in many aspects such as end-to-end delay, throughput, and packet delivery ratio and so on. So far, many...

An Intelligent Routing Protocol for Delay Tolerant Networks Using Genetic Algorithm

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Akhavan Bitaghsir, Saeed (Author) ; Hendessi, Faramarz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to the dynamic topology of vehicular ad hoc networks, routing of packets in these networks faces a lot of difficulties. The situation will become more challenging when we have to deal with Delay Tolerant Networks (DTN) which are also sparse and partitioned and we need to use some vehicles to store the packets and carry them from one partition to another. Despite all these difficulties, by looking through movements of vehicles in an urban environment, we can find out that the topology of the network does not change in a pure random way and we can bring the traffic models of streets into account for having better routing performance. In this thesis, we proposed an intelligent routing...

Analysis and Performance Enhancement of MAC Layer Protocols in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Ghafourian Ghahramani, Amir Ali (Author) ; Afshin Hemmatyar, Ali Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are aimed to provide innovative services to improve safety of the traffic and make the use of the transport networks more coordinated. Such services are implemented by establishing wireless communications among the vehicles. The resulting mobile ad hoc network formed among the moving vehicles is called the Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET). The IEEE 802.11p has been emerged as the first standardized contention-based MAC protocol for VANETs. The overall performance of the contention-based MAC protocols is directly dependent on the number of the contending nodes . To analyze the performance of the 802.11p protocol, most of the existing approaches...

    Traffic Light Smartification Using Graphs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mobayen, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Hemmatyar, Ali Mohammad Afshin (Supervisor) ; Haj Sadeghi, Khosrow (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Since traffic lights are the only mechanized system at street level, their operation mode affects traffic congestion. Since traffic lights organize vehicles at crossways, the target of traffic light smartification is to reduce waiting time based on the density of traffic flows. There are many topics that work in this field to recognize traffic before making any decision based on traffic. Hence, if it is possible to introduce an algorithm for change static timing and predetermined timing of the traffic lights, it can affect the density of traffic at the large scale. This dissertation introduces an algorithm to reduce traffic congestion using traffic lights and correct timing. In this case,...

Security Issues and Challenges in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANET)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Feiz, Mohammad Mehdi (Author) ; Movaghar, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are currently attracting the attention of researchers around the world. They offer a wide range of applications improving road safety and driving comfort. Since VANET applications affect safety-of-life, data security in a vehicular system is mandatory. VANET is a special case of Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET). Routing in VANET is a controversial issue. Furthermore, Security at routing level is so important because if the routing is compromised, other protocol layers on top of the network layer are also compromised. In this thesis, DSDV, DSR and AODV routing protocols are simulated to understand which of these protocols are suitable for VANET. Finding...

Real Time Location Finding for Vehicles in Transport Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sorush Arzani, Mohammad (Author) ; Hemmatyar, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In mobile ad hoc networks, having an efficient routing protocol to deal with dynamics in network topology, based on the user behavior learning, has a significant role in generating more accurate results. It is valuable to use a realistic mobility model in such networks so that the results from the simulation will reflect the actual reaction of mobile nodes in the real world. Using a realistic mobility model helps simulation to have more accurate results in comparison with other kinds of mobility models especially in a Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET). Before exchanging information between moving vehicles, the destination node should be located. However, the existing location service...
