Modified Buongiorno's model for fully developed mixed convection flow of nanofluids in a vertical annular pipe

    , Article Computers and Fluids ; Vol. 89 , 2014 , pp. 124-132 ; ISSN: 00457930 Malvandi, A ; Moshizi, S. A ; Soltani, E. G ; Ganji, D. D ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper deals with the mixed convective heat transfer of nanofluids through a concentric vertical annulus. Because of the non-adherence of the fluid-solid interface in the presence of nanoparticle migrations, known as slip condition, the Navier's slip boundary condition was considered at the pipe walls. The employed model for nanofluid includes the modified two-component four-equation non-homogeneous equilibrium model that fully accounts for the effects of nanoparticles volume fraction distribution. Assuming the fully developed flow and heat transfer, the basic partial differential equations including continuity, momentum, and energy equations have been reduced to two-point ordinary...

Simulation of Gas-Liquid Flow Patterns in Vertical, Horizontal and Inclined Pipes and Assessment of Empirical Models

    Abstract
Multiphase flows are commonly encountered in oil and gas industries. Flow fields in production operations are often complex and include multiphase flows of gas and liquid. The prediction of pressure gradients, liquid holdup and flow patterns occurring during the simultaneous flow of gas and liquid in pipes and wellbores is necessary in designing production facilities. Previously, due to their complex nature, these flow patterns have been mostly investigated only experimentally and empirical correlations based on the experimental data. From another point of view, it is almost impossible to experimentally realize all the flowing conditions for each of the flowing patterns. Nowadays, computer...

Effects of anti-vortex plates on air entrainment by free vortex

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 20, Issue 2 , 2013 , Pages 251-258 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Kabiri Samani, A. R ; Borghei, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Free surface vortex and air entrainment are not favorable experiences in hydropower and pumping projects. While complete omission of vortex and air entrainment is not always cost effective, partially weakened free-surface vortex flow is more economical and practical. Hence, in this study, a comprehensive set of experiments were conducted to partially reduce vortex strength and air entrainment at vertical pipe intakes, using rectangular anti-vortex plates. This phenomenon results in increasing water discharge compared with a corresponding free-surface vortex for the same water depth, i.e. in cases of shaft spillway. The plates were used as singles and in pairs and placed symmetrically and...

    Intelligent image-based gas-liquid two-phase flow regime recognition

    Abstract
Identification of different flow regimes in industrial systems operating under two-phase flow conditions is necessary in order to safely design and optimize their performance. In the present work, experiments on two-phase flow have been performed in a large scale test facility with the length of 6 m and diameter of 5 cm. Four main flow regimes have been observed in vertical air-water two-phase flow at moderate superficial velocities of gas and water namely: Bubbly, Slug, Churn, and Annular. An image processing technique was used to extract information from each picture. This information includes the number of bubbles or objects, area, perimeter, as well as the height and width of objects...

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Volume 75, Issue 3-4 , January , 2011 , Pages 327-335 ; 09204105 (ISSN) Hanafizadeh, P ; Ghanbarzadeh, S ; Saidi, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Simplicity of manufacturing and high reliability of airlift pumps have promoted these pumps to be used in different industries, such as petrochemical and oil industries, especially in oil recovery from dead wells. One of the main parameters affecting the performance of these pumps is two-phase flow regime in the main pipe of the pump. In this research, experimental data are utilized to investigate the influence of the flow regimes on the performance of an airlift pump. The data are obtained for air-water two-phase flow in a vertical pipe with a diameter of d = 50. mm and an aspect ratio of L/d = 120. In this study, the gas liquid upward two-phase flow regime in the upriser pipe is...

    Abstract
A new approach has been presented to solve gas-liquid flow numerically in vertical pipes of air-lift pumps. To improve modelling, a new strategy has been employed with the capability of coupling the continuity and momentum equations and enforcing the role of pressure directly in the continuity equation. This is achieved via applying a novel scheme called the Physical Influence Scheme (PIS). The current finite volume solution is compared with other available numerical solutions. Indeed, they are in fair agreement. However, the present predictions are far superior to those obtained from an existing simple method, which is widely used in airlift pump modelling

    Abstract
In order to safe design and optimize performance of some industrial systems, it's often needed to categorize two-phase flow into different regimes. In each flow regime, flow conditions have similar geometric and hydrodynamic characteristics. Traditionally, flow regime identification was carried out by flow visualization or instrumental indicators. In this research3 kind of neural networks have been used to predict system characteristic and flow regime, and results of them were compared: radial basis function neural networks, self organized and Multilayer perceptrons (supervised) neural networks. The data bank contains experimental pressure signalfor a wide range of operational conditions in...
