Effects of bulk viscosity in non-linear bubble dynamics

    , Article Journal of Physics Condensed Matter ; Volume 16, Issue 10 , 2004 , Pages 1687-1694 ; 09538984 (ISSN) Moshaii, A ; Sadighi Bonabi, R ; Taeibi Rahni, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The non-linear bubble dynamics equations in a compressible liquid have been modified by considering the effects of compressibility of both the liquid and the gas at the bubble interface. A new bubble boundary equation has been derived, which includes a new term resulting from the liquid bulk viscosity effect. The influence of this term has been numerically investigated by considering the effects of water vapour and chemical reactions inside the bubble. The results clearly indicate that the new term has an important damping role at the collapse, so that its consideration dramatically decreases the amplitude of the bubble rebounds after the collapse. This damping feature is more remarkable for...

Electrowetting induced droplet jumping over a bump

    Abstract
We study electrowetting induced droplet jumping over a system consisting of a flat surface and a topographical bump mounted on the surface. Different bump shapes including triangular and elliptical configurations are considered and the results are compared with the results of the flat surface. The results indicate that droplet jumping is enhanced over the bumps and the droplet jumps to larger heights compared with the flat surface because of the lower viscous dissipation. The shape of the bump can considerably affect the droplet dynamics. Between the considered shapes the triangular bump provides a larger dynamic and the droplet on the surface with this bump can jump with larger velocity....

    Abstract
In reply to the comment of Lu and An on our publication paper [Phys. Rev. E 70, 016304 (2004)], we show that the consideration of water vapor exchange at the bubble interface is essential for obtaining our results and the adiabatic model is too simple to produce the differences. Moreover, in spite of smallness of the compressional viscosity term at the collapse, the illustrated differences are reasonable due to the strong nonlinearity of the bubble dynamics at the collapse and its sensitivity to even small perturbations. We emphasize on the correctness of our calculation results and our simulation programs are now available on the web. © 2005 The American Physical Society

Saffman-Taylor instability in yield stress fluids

    , Article Journal of Physics Condensed Matter ; Volume 17, Issue 14 , 2005 , Pages S1209-S1218 ; 09538984 (ISSN) Maleki Jirsaraei, N ; Lindner, A ; Rouhani, S ; Bonn, D ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Pushing a fluid with a less viscous one gives rise to the well known Saffman-Taylor instability. This instability is important in a wide variety of applications involving strongly non-Newtonian fluids that often exhibit a yield stress. Here we investigate the Saffmann-Taylor instability in this type of fluid, in longitudinal flows in Hele-Shaw cells. In particular, we study Darcy's law for yield stress fluids. The dispersion equation for the flow is similar to the equations obtained for ordinary viscous fluids but the viscous terms in the dimensionless numbers conditioning the instability now contain the yield stress. This also has repercussions on the wavelength of the instability as it...

Application of ultrasonic wave technology as an asphaltene flocculation inhibition method

    , Article Saint Petersburg 2012 - Geosciences: Making the Most of the Earth's Resources ; 2012 Najafi, I ; Amani, M ; Mousavi, M. R ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Based on series of crude oil rheological properties and asphaltene flocculation confocal microscopy analysis, Najafi et al., (2011) reported the existence of an optimum radiation time at which asphaltenic crude oils reach the minimum kinematic viscosity. Accordingly, they proposed the idea of asphaltene flocculation inhibition due to wave radiation. The present investigation is a continuous effort to provide more information about the process of flocculation inhibition. Confocal microscopy and rheological analyses are performed on different crude oils to prove the repeatability of the observed phenomena. The asphaltene content analysis was done based on IP143 procedure, which provides more...

Prediction of the kinematic viscosity of crude oil fractions

    , Article Petroleum Science and Technology ; Volume 28, Issue 6 , 2010 , Pages 646-653 ; 10916466 (ISSN) Soltani, A ; Nozarpour, A ; Aghamiri, S. F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A generalized equation based on modified Eyring's theory for predicting kinematic viscosity of petroleum fractions is proposed in this work. The equation uses two reference fluids including a pair of (C6 and C10), (C10 and C14), or (C14 and C20) for petroleum fractions of molecular weight higher than 70 and lower than 300. Validity and accuracy of this equation have been confirmed by comparing the obtained results of this equation with experimental data. In contrast to other correlations that require so many specific parameters for oil viscosity prediction, this type of equation requires only molecular weight and true boiling point. The results obtained in this work are in agreement with...

BEM modeling of surface water wave motion with laminar boundary layers

    , Article Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements ; Volume 30, Issue 1 , 2006 , Pages 14-21 ; 09557997 (ISSN) Jamali, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
This study is concerned with numerical modeling of viscous surface wave motion using boundary element method (BEM). The equations of motion for thin boundary layers at the solid surfaces are coupled with the potential flow in the bulk of the fluid, and a mixed BEM-finite difference technique is used to obtain the viscosity-related quantities such as wave damping rate, shear stress, and velocity distribution inside the boundary layer. The technique is presented for standing surface wave motion. An excellent agreement is obtained between the numerical predictions and the previous results. The extension to other free surface problems is straightforward. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Characterization and transesterification of Iranian bitter almond oil for biodiesel production

    Abstract
In the present work the production of biodiesel using bitter almond oil (BAO) in a potassium hydroxide catalyzed transesterification reaction was investigated. The BAO was obtained from resources available in Iran and its physical and chemical properties including iodine value, acid value, density, kinematic viscosity, fatty acid composition and mean molecular weight were specified. The low acid value of BAO (0.24. mg. KOH/g) indicated that the pretreatment of raw oil with acid was not required. The fatty acid content analysis confirmed that the contribution of unsaturated fatty acids in the BAO is high (84.7. wt.%). Effect of different parameters including methanol to oil molar ratio (3-11....
