    Abstract
Abstract: Underwater vehicles when yawed to free stream flow, like submarines in a turning maneuver, produce large vortical separated regions. This vortical flow affects acoustic, body drag, control effectiveness and maneuverability. A suitable way to reduce the effects of this separated flow is to use vortex generators. The main goal of this study is to investigate the effect of the vortex generator on the flow field around a standard underwater model employing the vortex generators by using the oil flow visualization method in wind tunnel only in yaw direction (0° ≤ β ≤ 30° angles of attack, due to the experimental cost) and the CFD method in the pitch direction (0° ≤ α ≤ 30° angles of...

    Abstract
This work aims to introduce a novel concept of wall jets wherein the flow is radially injected into a medium through a sector of a cylinder, called quasi-radial (QR) wall jets. The results revealed that fluid dynamics of the QR wall jet flow differs from that of conventional wall jets. Indeed, lateral and normal propagations of a conventional three-dimensional wall jet are via shear stresses. While, lateral propagation of a QR wall jet is due to mean lateral component of the velocity field. Moreover, discharged Arrays of conventional three-dimensional wall jets in quiescent air lead to formation of a combined wall jet at large distant from the nozzles, while QR wall jet immediately spread in...

Simulation of Drag Reduction Via Microgrooves

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Etemadi, Armin (Author) ; Moosavi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Drag reduction on surfaces always has been a great case of study, especially in transport industry. This project discusses the external laminar flow of a single-phase fluid over a flat plate and the effects of making rectangular tiny grooves - in micron or millimeter - on them to reduce total drag. Making grooves with appropriate geometry on surfaces causes the fluid-solid contact area on the groove's surface turn into fluid-fluid and as a result the fluid will not shed into the groove. In other words the flow instead of having a no-slip boundary condition on inner surfaces of the groove, creates vortices in them that causes a remarkable reduction in velocity gradient followed by a skin...

    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Compact heat exchangers as modern industrial devices are designed to improve heat recovery and saving energy processes in restricted spaces. In the current study, effect of a uniform external magnetic field with Fe3O4/water nanofluid for heat transfer enhancement of a fin-and-tube compact heat exchanger is numerically investigated. The obtained results are verified by the available experimental data to demonstrate accuracy of the present simulation. The results indicated that the local and average heat transfer coefficients increase around the tubes in the presence of an external magnetic field due to the vortex formation behind the tubes as well as the flow pattern alteration in the heat...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shekaridahaj, Morteza (Author) ; Farhanieh, Bijan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The ever-increasing need for energy compels researchers to investigate different manners of energy saving. Aَs we know well, one of the effective ways to save energy is to improve the energy consumption of turbomachinery devices such as axial flow fans. Fans are the most applicable of turbomachinery which supply needed airflow, which can be used in ventilation systems, Cooling systems for cars and machines, smoke extraction, and supply required air for firing. Therefore, improving their efficiency can play a significant role in reducing energy consumption and enhancing energy storage. One of the most critical factors in reducing the efficiency of the fans is the stall phenomenon, which can...

Separation control using quasi-radial wall jets

    , Article Aerospace Science and Technology ; Volume 68 , 2017 , Pages 240-251 ; 12709638 (ISSN) Javadi, K ; Hajipour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Masson SAS  2017
    Abstract
In this paper, flow separation control over a NACA 4415 wing section using arrays of discrete quasi-radial wall jets is numerically investigated. This novel flow control method is studied under conditions which the wing section angle of attack is α=18 degrees and Reynolds number based on chord length is Rec=550000. Contours of mean streamwise velocity indicated that quasi-radial wall jets cover wing surface rapidly. Therefore, arranging them in a spanwise row can be an effective way in adding momentum to the near wall fluid particles. According to the results, if blowing parameters of the jets be chosen correctly, arrays of quasi-radial wall jets would lead to considerable decrease in wake...

    Abstract
In order to reach a more efficient and compact heat exchanger, it is essential to optimize the design, having in mind the impact of different geometrical parameters. Many of the previously cited studies in the area of heat transfer enhancement using vortex generators were confined only to defined points in the possible design space. Thus, a multiobjective optimization study is particularly suitable in order to cover this space entirely. A CFD simulation along with Pareto method were used to simulate the air flow and heat transfer and optimize the design parameters. The angle of attack of a pair of delta-winglets mounted behind each tube is varied between β = -90° and ß = +90°. Three...

    , Article Chemical Engineering and Processing - Process Intensification ; Volume 141 , 2019 ; 02552701 (ISSN) Nakhchi, M. E ; Esfahani, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2019
    Abstract
This paper aims to present a numerical model for heat transfer intensification in a heat exchanger tube equipped with novel double V-cut twisted tape. The effects of different cut ratios (0.6 < b/c<1.8)on the turbulent flow characteristics and thermal performance of the system are investigated over the Reynolds number range from 5000 to 15,000. The accuracy of (RNG)k-ε turbulence model used in the present study is validated by comparing with experimental results. The tube equipped with double V-cut twisted tape shows improved thermal performance in comparison with conventional twisted tape. This improvement is due to the additional vortex flow induced by the V-cuts which leads to more...
