    Abstract
Water channeling due to reservoir heterogeneity is an important factor that could decrease the displacement efficiency of a water flooding process. In this study, the ability of polyacrylamide/ chromium acetate system on altering water path in heterogeneous layered media was investigated using glass bead micromodels. After the relevant parameters were optimized, a series of water and gel injection experiments were conducted in glass bead micromodel. The experimental results show that sweep efficiency is basically controlled by gel strength. The gel strength has a minor impact on the oil recovery from the higher permeable zone, whereas the oil recovery from the lower permeable zone is a...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nasrollah Poursamami, Amir (Author) ; Vesal, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this paper we seek to find the contribution of groundwater in irrigation agriculture in Iran. We use nationwide panel data of agricultural production in the period of 1993-2013. The results show us differences in productivity of agricultural outputs due to availability of groundwater. Panel data allows us to control regional factors like soil fertility affecting the productivity. We are looking for the main contributors to groundwater usage. Population growth in demand side and groundwater availability in supply side seem to be the most important factors

Synthesis and Application of Preformed Viscoelastic Hydrogels in Enhanced Oil Recovery

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aqcheli, Farzad (Author) ; Taghikhani, Vahid (Supervisor) ; Baghban Salehi, Mahsa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Preformed particle gels (PPGs) due to its advatantage over commonly used in situ gels has been successfully applied for controlling excess water production in mature oil reservoirs. Field results of using PPGs in oil fields shows that commonly used PPGs are highly sensitive to hard reservoir conditions such as high temperature and salinity and can not effectively block fractures and high permeability layers.Objects of this study are synthesis and evaluating performance of this novel polymer based hydrogel in oil reservoirs with high temperature and salinity. Central composite design ( which is a experiment design approach) was used for synthesizing thirteen gel samples and optimal sample was...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadi, Behzad (Author) ; Shafii, Mohammad Behshad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, as a result of population growth and groundwater resources pollution, many countries in the world are facing serious water crises. Several alternative solutions have been investigated to overcome this obstacle. Atmospheric water vapor processing (AWVP) is a new solution to generate freshwater from ambient moist air. The atmosphere surrounding the earth is potentially a valuable water resource which contains a large amount of freshwater. This paper addresses the effectiveness of thermoelectric coolers (TECs) for refrigeration to produce freshwater from ambient air. Consequently, both numerical and experimental analysis are then used as the basis of water production calculation. 18...

Experimental investigation of the effect of solar collecting area on the performance of active solar stills with different brine depths

    , Article Desalination ; Volume 358 , 2015 , Pages 76-83 ; 00119164 (ISSN) Taghvaei, H ; Taghvaei, H ; Jafarpur, K ; Feilizadeh, M ; Karimi Estahbanati, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Solar collecting area is one of the most important operating parameters of active solar stills. No experimental work has been performed to investigate the effect of this parameter to date. Furthermore in all of previous theoretical studies the effect of solar collecting area was examined during only the first 24-hour period of the operation of stills with one specified brine depth. However the present work experimentally studies the long-term simultaneous effects of collector area and brine depth on the performance of active solar stills. For this purpose four parallel active solar stills with different collector areas were fabricated and experiments were conducted for 5 consecutive days...

An innovative solar assisted desiccant-based evaporative cooling system for co-production of water and cooling in hot and humid climates

    , Article Energy Conversion and Management ; Volume 185 , 2019 , Pages 396-409 ; 01968904 (ISSN) Heidari, A ; Roshandel, R ; Vakiloroaya, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
Although evaporative coolers consume much lower electricity than the vapor compression systems, they are not applicable in humid climates. Combination of desiccant wheels and evaporative coolers, known as desiccant-based evaporative cooling systems, allows evaporative coolers to be used in humid climates, which provide significant energy and environmental advantages with respect to vapor compression systems. However, one of the main disadvantages of evaporative cooling is the high water. Regarding the global water crisis, a cooling system which saves both water and energy will be an attractive alternative to the current cooling systems. To this aim, this paper presents a novel...

Experimental Investigation of Fractures’ Water Shut-off in Low Salinity Water Injection Using Preformed Particle Gels

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sanandaji, Farshid (Author) ; Fatemi, Mobin (Supervisor) ; Ghazanfari, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
As the reservoir matures, especially in fractured reservoirs, oil production is usually accompanied by the production of some unwanted water. Water production causes environmental problems and imposes high costs on the production system, including the cost of separating water and oil, corrosion of facility, and sometimes, leading to abandoning well. One way to solve this problem is to use gels as a blocking agent. Today, preformed particle gels are used as an alternative to in situ gels, which can solve some issues of in-situ gels, such as uncertainty in gelling time and penetration depth. This research comprises three main parts. In the first part, four samples of preformed particle gels...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Eghtesad, Amir Saman (Author) ; Afshin, Hossein (Supervisor) ; Kazemzadeh Hanani, Siamak (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Access to potable water with standard quality is an inevitable component of human’s lives. Seawater desalination is the precedure of removing the impurities and contaminants in water to achieve the suitable quality for human consumption. Freeze desalination, by consuming relatively much lower energy compared to other techniques has shown to be a promising method for desalination. This technique requires the exertion of a cold source to the system which is then accompanied by simultaneous rejection of the impurities from the water. Regarding this, a numerical study on freeze desalination a hollow cylinder is carried out to determine the effects of the design variables such as heat flux,...

    Abstract
This experimental study is aimed at evaluation of the performance of secondary WAG injection in carbonate cores at different pressures. To do so, a comprehensive series of high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) core flooding tests are conducted. The fluid system includes reservoir dead and live crude oil, CO 2, and synthetic brine while the chosen porous media consists of a number of fractured carbonate core samples. Parameters such as oil recovery factor, water and oil production rates, and pressure drop along the core are recorded for both dead and live oil. According to results, at first increasing pressure improves the oil recovery, but this improvement after MMP is not as significant as...

On the importance of gel rigidity and coverage in a smart water shutoff treatment in gas wells

    , Article Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering ; Volume 31 , 2016 , Pages 808-818 ; 18755100 (ISSN) Sharifpour, E ; Escrochi, M ; Riazi, M ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper addresses a conceptual study on different aspects of a novel smart treatment method for a relatively new challenge of saline water production from low permeability lenses of high flow gas wells. Selective sealing of such lenses along with minor effect on gas productivity usually faces practical difficulties due to the inherent permeability contrast. Engineered application of salt sensitive gellan biopolymer through a smart treatment scenario that includes a protective gas flow proved its ability for treating such challenge. This paper investigates the importance of the gel rigidity and its coverage in the smart treatment scenario through considering the brine salinity and the...
