    Synthesis and properties of lead oxide carbonate

    Abstract
    PbCO 3·PbO and PbCO 3·2PbO compounds were prepared by thermal methods. The structure of each compound was determined by using XRD technique, and their purity was confirmed by analytical methods (98%). Also the thermal characteristics of each compound were investigated by thermogravimetry. At 600°C both compounds decompose completely and produce lead(II) oxide. © 2006 Nauka/Interperiodica  

    Effects of ion-exchange and hydrolysis mechanisms on lead silicate glass corrosion

    Abstract
    Corrosion of lead silicate glass (LSG) contacting 0.5 M aqueous nitric acid (HNO 3) was investigated via scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma analysis, and weight-loss measurement to determine the respective contributions of the ion-exchange vs. the hydrolysis reactions. The LSG having X M ≡ Pb+K+Na/Si mole ratios of less than 0.7 showed very little weight loss with no Si network deterioration. At X M > 0.7, the mechanism changed into the hydrolysis, which caused the formation of a networkless gel layer resting at the solid/liquid interface.     Abstract
    The effects of resin type and content as well as graphite content on physical and mechanical properties of MgO-C refractories, such as density, porosity and strength were studied. The samples were formulated with various amounts of graphite and resin, and their oxidation behavior was isothermally investigated using a thermo gravimeter (TG), in air and at a temperature ranges from 900 to 1300 °C. The results indicated that, low-viscosity resins improved compressibility, but it degraded the strength.     Abstract
    The hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) behavior of X70 pipeline steel was studied by means of Linear Polarization Resistance (LPR), hydrogen permeation tests, weight loss and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). In this study, the dissolved HZS was created by chemical reactions in solution. The specimens were immersed into synthetic sea water saturated with HZS. The experimental results showed that the increase of exposure time and HZS concentration leads to an increase of the hydrogen content in X70 steel, which plays a key role in the initiation and propagation of HIC

    Abstract
    An artificial neural network (ANN) model was used to predict the weight loss of MgO-C composites at different temperatures and graphite contents. The general idea of ANN modeling was presented and after that the empirical weight loss data were used for both model verification and assessment of the oxidation rate predictions. The model was proved to have an astounding power in predicting kinetic parameters of the oxidation process. Graphite oxidation was, for example, found to be controlled by alternative diffusion steps.     Cu-Sn composites incorporated with graphite and/or SiC particles were produced by electrodeposition technique. The effect of particle concentration in the plating bath and current density on tin content and volume percentage of particles in the coatings has been investigated. Structure, morphology, micro hardness and wear properties of the coatings have been studied. The results showed that particles cause an increase of tin content in the plated Cu-Sn. Graphite and silicon carbide particles had different effects on coating hardness; 7.8. vol.% graphite decreased the hardness of Cu-Sn layer from 231. Hv to 172.     Thermal degradation behavior of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) nanocomposites, with different nanotubes contents (0.5, 1.5 and 3.5 wt%) prepared via in-situ polymerization technique have been investigated using thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). TGA spectra revealed that these nanocomposites had enhanced thermal stability and no significant mass loss (<0.4 wt%) occurred up to 350°C.     Aim. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a training program on body composition, GH, IGF-1 and insulin in overweight and obese female college students. Methods. The 17 overweight college student females divided into 2 groups: Experimental group (E) with 3 sessions per week, 6 weeks duration (N=9,Age=18.9 ± 1.3,BMI= 28.8 ± 2.6), and non-exercising control group (C) (N=8, Age=19.3 ± 1.8, BMI=26.3 ± 0.9). All measures included Vo2max, body composition, IGF-1, GH and insulin were done at baseline and following the protocol. Results.     Abstract
    Lead silicate glasses (LSGs) have high gamma-ray attenuation but low chemical durability properties. In this work, LSGs with (55.5-68.5 wt%) PbO content containing ZrO2 and TiO2 additions were produced. The chemical corrosion of various produced LSGs in 0.5 N HNO3 aqueous solution and determination of their gamma-ray attenuation coefficients for 60Co and 137Cs sources were investigated.     LM13 alloy is widely used in piston industry, due to its low coefficient of thermal expansion, excellent castability and hot tear resistance. In this research effect of casting process on wear behavior of LM13 alloy was investigated. First, samples were produced using two casting processes and heat treated.     Abstract
    During the recent years, some Mg based alloys have extensively been considered as a new generation of degradable and absorbable bio-medical materials. In this work, the Mg–2Zn–1Gd–1Ca (wt%) alloy as a new metallic bio-material was produced by the casting process followed by the heat treatment. The samples of the alloy were solution treated at temperatures of 500, 550, and 600 °C and then quench aged at temperatures of 125, 150, and 175 °C. The results of SEM-EDS examinations indicated that the alloy microstructure consists of α-Mg matrix and the Ca2Mg6Zn3 and Mg3Gd2Zn3 secondary phases.     Multi wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) doped ZnO nanofibers were fabricated by electrospinning for the first time. We have successfully demonstrated the photocatalytic activity of doped nanofibers under visible light. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the diameter of MWCNT-doped ZnO nanofibers varied from 120 to 300 nm without agglomeration of MWCNT. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction studies proved the formation of ZnO bond and wurtzite structure with smaller crystal size in doped nanofibers.     Electrophoretic technique was used to deposit micro- and nano-sized aluminum nitride coatings on stainless steel surfaces by using a well-dispersed stable suspension produced by addition of AlN powder plus a small amount of iodine to ethanol. Parabolic regime governed the deposition. Electrophoretic deposition for 240 s at 100 V resulted in formation of a uniformly dense film on the top, but a porous inhomogeneous layer at the bottom. This was attributed to fast deposition of coarse particles and/or agglomerates at large electric fields.     Hydrogen storage capacities of raw, oxidized, purified and Fe-doped multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were studied by electrochemical method. Based on transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopic data, thermal oxidation removed defective graphite shells at the outer walls of MWCNTs. The analysis results indicated that the acid treatment dissolved most of the catalysts and opened some tips of the MWCNTs. Thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry results illustrated that by oxidation and purification of MWCNTs, the weight loss peak shifts toward a higher temperature.     Abstract
    Post-deposition annealing effects on nanomechanical properties of granular TiO2 films on soda-lime glass substrates were studied. In particular, the effects of Na diffusion on the films' mechanical properties were examined. TiO2 photocatalyst films, 330 nm thick, were prepared by dip-coating using a TiO2 sol, and were annealed between 100 °C and 500 °C. Film's morphology, physical and nanomechanical properties were characterized by atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential thermo-gravimetric analysis, and nanoindentation.     The effect of Rare earths addition to AZ91 magnesium alloy and its influence on the microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated in this study. Addition of cerium rich misch metal to AZ91 alloy resulted in formation of needle shape particles, which had a very high thermal stability, providing superior mechanical properties compared to AZ91 magnesium alloy. As a result, the grain boundaries were less susceptible for grain boundary sliding at high temperatures.     Background: A small amount of methanol is produced endogenously in the human body but it is efficiently metabolized by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and other enzymes, and the products eliminated without harm.
