    Abstract
    The heat affected zone (HAZ) softening behavior of strain-hardened Al-6.7Mg alloy welded by gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process was investigated. Increasing the heat input during welding led to formation of a wider HAZ. Moreover, the size of the precipitates was increased at higher heat inputs. Consequently, by increasing the heat input, lower strength was obtained for the welding joints. At the second stage of the study, pulsed-GTAW (PGTAW) process was employed to improve the strength of the joints.     The effect of the layer in contact with tool (Al or Cu) and the depth of plunge on friction stir butt welding of Al-Cu bilayer laminated composites produced by cold roll welding were studied. The measurement of weld cross sections and variations of the axial load and torque during welding process showed that material flow is influenced by the material which is in contact with the shoulder. Being Al layer in contact with the shoulder led to higher force and torque during welding, and a defect-free weld could be obtained in this manner.     Aluminum alloy series 5xxx lose their strength, especially in the heat affected zone (HAZ) of welds, due to thermal cycle during welding process. Because of this thermal cycle, re-crystallization and grain coarsening in HAZ occur, which result in decreasing of mechanical properties. In this paper the influence of "overloading" and "shot peening" as methods of post weld treatment on mechanical properties of AA5083 aluminum alloy welded joints is investigated.     A high-quality butt joint of aluminum to copper (Al/Cu) can rarely be achieved by conventional fusion and solid-state welding processes. In this research, the appropriateness of friction stir welding (FSW) for making high-quality Al/Cu welds was studied. A sound Al/Cu butt joint was achieved with relatively high strength in uni-axial tensile tests. Mechanical properties and microstructure of the sound friction stir welds were examined. The ultimate tensile strength of the joints reached about 75 percent of the aluminum base metal, with the fracture occurring at aluminum side.     In this work, examinations on the microstructure and mechanical properties of plain carbon steel and AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel dissimilar welds are carried out. Welding is conducted in both autogenous and using ER309L austenitic filler rod conditions through gas tungsten arc welding process. The results indicate that fully-ferritic and duplex ferritic-martensitic microstructures are formed for autogenous and filler-added welds, respectively.     This study concentrates on the effects of weld sequence and welding fixtures on distribution and magnitude of induced arc welding residual stresses built up in butt-joint of Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) AA5251 plates. Aluminum plates have been welded under different welding conditions and then, longitudinal and transverse residual stresses were measured in different points of the welded plates employing hole-drilling technique.     In the welding process, droplet detachment regularity is important for a good welding quality. The frequency of detachment is one of influential indices for assessing the quality of GMAW in the globular transfer mode. In this paper, a relationship is estimated for measuring droplet detachment frequency in the globular GMAW. The droplet detachment frequency is estimated with a curve fitting by the least squares error (LSE) method.     In the present work, specimens were cut out from St-37 plates with 19 mm thickness. The thickness of plates was reduced to 12.5 mm by milling and grinding operations. Then a standard V-shaped fillet was made on one edge of the plates. Two plates were butt-welded by standard metal arc gas (MAG) welding process. Residual stresses induced by welding were measured on 20 specimens by centre hole drilling. Load controlled axial fatigue tests were carried out to determine the fatigue life of specimens. Finite element method was employed to simulate the welding process and post weld heat treatment (PWHT) to find the factors affecting the failure in tube-to-tubesheet weldments. Residual stresses in two different geometries of tube-to-tubesheet weldment were calculated through uncoupled thermal-structural analysis.
