Corrosion behavior of aluminum 6061 alloy joined by friction stir welding and gas tungsten arc welding methods

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 39 , 2012 , Pages 329-333 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Fahimpour, V ; Sadrnezhaad, S. K ; Karimzadeh, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Wrought aluminum sheets with thickness of 13. mm were square butt-welded by friction stir welding (FSW) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) methods. Corrosion behavior of the welding zone was probed by Tafel polarization curve. Optical metallography (OM) and scanning electron microscopy together with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) were used to determine morphology and semi-quantitative analysis of the welded zone. FSW resulted in equiaxed grains of about 1-2 μm, while GTAW caused dendritic structure of the welded region. Resistance to corrosion was greater for the FSW grains than the GTAW structure. In both cases, susceptibility to corrosion attack was greater in the welded region...

    Abstract
Numerous advantages of application of tailor welded blanks (TWBs) in automobile industry, namely reduction of weight, fuel consumption and air pollution, have made the manufacturers eager to investigate in this field. On the other hand, while experiments generally provide valuable information in regard with mechanical behaviors, but utilization of simulation methods has extended vastly due to time and cost saving issues. One challenging issue in numerically analyzing the forming behavior of transversely welded TWBs, welded by laser welding methods, has been the presence of weld zone. While some researchers believe that during simulation, the weld zone can be neglected due to its minority and...

Thermo-mechanical and microstructural issues in dissimilar friction stir welding of AA5086-AA6061

    , Article Journal of Materials Science ; Volume 46, Issue 10 , 2011 , Pages 3258-3268 ; 00222461 (ISSN) Jamshidi Aval, H ; Serajzadeh, S ; Kokabi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this research, thermo-mechanical behavior and microstructural events in dissimilar friction stir welding of AA6061-T6 and AA5086-O have been evaluated. The thermo-mechanical responses of materials during the process have been predicted employing a three-dimensional model together with a finite element software, ABAQUS. Then, mechanical properties and microstructures of the weld zone were studied with the aid of experimental observations and model predictions. It is found that the mixing of material in the weld nugget is performed more efficiently when AA5086 is in the advancing side and also the temperature field is distributed asymmetrically resulting in larger thermally affected region...

Microstructure characteristics of GTAW welded joint of a cast Ni 3Al

    , Article Welding in the World ; Volume 53, Issue SPECIAL ISSUE , 2009 , Pages 595-601 ; 00432288 (ISSN) Pouraliakbar, H ; Kokabi, A. H ; Asgari, S ; Kamali, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A series of samples with different compositions and parameters were welded together. The alloys were based on Ni-8Al-8Cr-l.5Mo-0.01B %wt composition with Zr additions of 1 and 3 %wt. Crack-free full-penetration welds of castable nickel aluminide alloy were performed using autogenous GTAW technique. It was found that Ni-Ni5Zr eutectic was associated with solidification cracks. Alloys were fully dendritic and also, weld metal consisted of columnar and axial dendrites beside the fusion line and in the middle, respectively. Optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques were employed to characterize the composition as well as the weld structure. X-Ray diffraction was utilized to...

    Abstract
Joining Mg to Al is challenging because of the deterioration of mechanical properties caused by the formation of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) at the Mg/Al interface. This study aims to improve the mechanical properties of welded samples by preventing the fracture location at the Mg/Al interface. Friction stir welding was performed to join Mg to Al at different rotational and travel speeds. The micro structure of the welded samples showed the IMCs layers containing Al12Mg17 (γ) and Al3Mg2 (β) at the welding zone with a thickness (> 3.5

    Abstract
A pulsed Nd:YAG laser welding of 1 mm thick Ti (grade 2) to 0.5 mm thick AA3105-O was performed by a ring-like spot joining. A 0.15 mm thick Al-12Si-2.5 Mg alloy was used as a filler metal. Intermetallic compounds of Ti3Al, Ti2Al, TiAl, Ti(Al,Si)3 and Mg2Si were observed respectively from Ti towards Al sides at the fusion zone. Si and Mg increased the strength of the Al re-solidified zone near the Ti-Al interface because of their easy dissolution in the Al. Exothermic effect of the Mg addition resulted in porosity in the welding zone. Joint strength of up to 98% of the Al base metal was obtained, which was much 14% higher than that achieved by autogenous welding. © 2019 Elsevier GmbH

    , Article Advanced Materials Research, 16 December 2011 through 18 December 2011 ; Volume 418-420 , December , 2012 , Pages 1486-1493 ; 10226680 (ISSN) ; 9783037853269 (ISBN) Razavi, A ; Hafezi, F ; Farrahi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Residual stresses resulted from localized non-uniform heating and subsequent cooling during welding processes enact an important role in the formation of cracks and welding distortions and have severe effect on performance of welded joints. The present research performs a three dimensional transient thermo Elasto-plastic analysis using finite element technique to simulate welding process. Welding simulation procedure is developed using the parametric design language of commercial code ANSYS for single pass T and butt welded joints. The procedure verified with predicted residual stress field found in literature to confirm the accuracy of the method. The material of the weld metal, HAZ and the...

    Abstract
In this work, thermo-mechanical behavior and microstructural evolution in similar and dissimilar friction stir welding of AA6061-T6 and AA5086-O have been investigated. Firstly, the thermo-mechanical behaviors of materials during similar and dissimilar FSW operations have been predicted using three-dimensional finite element software, ABAQUS, then, the mechanical properties and the developed microstructures within the welded samples have been studied with the aid of experimental observations and model predictions. It is found that different strengthening mechanisms in AA5086 and AA6061 result in complex behaviors in hardness of the welded cross section where the hardness variation in similar...
