Simulation of Kick Control Process During Drilling with Assumption of Two-phase Flow

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jahanpeima, Yaser (Author) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
During the drilling of oil and gas wells, the probability of a kick resulting in blow out is high. In the event of a kick, well should be controlled immediately and prevented blowing out. Common methods include: driller method, wait and weight method and concurrent method. In this project, simulation of well control process is done for common well control methods, for water based muds and oil based muds. Movement of different fluids, their combination and removal of fluid from the well are simulated and the results are listed. The flash calculations are done for oil based mud and dissolution of kick fluid in the oil based mud is considered. After simulating and calculating necessary...

Multi-criterion based well placement and control in the water-flooding of naturally fractured reservoir

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; 2016 ; 09204105 (ISSN) Bagherinezhad, A ; Boozarjomehry Bozorgmehry, R ; Pishvaie, M. R ; Shaarif University of Technology

    Abstract
In the optimization of naturally fractured reservoirs, it is required to take into account their complex flow behavior due to high conductivity fractures. In this regard, the possible effects of fractures must be included in the optimization procedure. In a water-flooding project, fast water breakthrough from injection to production wells may be occurred because of high permeability fractures. To consider the effect of the fracture system, a multi-criterion optimization procedure is proposed in this work. For this contribution, Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm version II (NSGA-II) is implemented for the optimization purposes. Considering the effect of the fracture system on the flow...

Optimization of Valve Setting in Smart Wells Using Multi-Segment Well Model

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahnama, Alireza (Author) ; Massihi, Mohsen (Supervisor) ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Smart wellsareunconventional wells with down-hole devices installed on their production tubing. Such wells allow us to continuouslymonitor flow rates, pressures, temperature and periodically adjust down-holevalves setting without any production intervention. This makes smart well technology to be considered as one of the most significantbreakthroughs in reservoir management technologies. So, modeling and simulating smart wellsautomated action represents a challenge in forecastingtheir performances. One of the easiest ways to model such wells is to transform theminto a multi-segment well with the ability tocontrol each segment independently. By using the commercial reservoir simulator,...

Gas Kick Detection and Modeling in Oil-based Mud

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abbasi Koushki, Mohammad (Author) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Rapid gas kick detection is an essential tool in safe well control operation. Gas kick can be defined as the uncontrolled release of gas from the formation into the wellbore due to insufficient hydrostatic pressure of the drilling mud. Delay in gas kick detection makes it challenging to control the well properly and may lead to blowout when gas reaches the surface, causing irreparable damage to life, property, and the environment. The usual method of identifying this phenomenon is through surface parameters such as increasing the return flow rate of drilling mud at the surface or increasing pit gain. The use of oil-based mud makes it more challenging to detect. Because, unlike water-based...

Controlled engineering of WS2 nanosheets-CdS nanoparticle heterojunction with enhanced photoelectrochemical activity

    , Article Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells ; Volume 141 , 2015 , Pages 260-269 ; 09270248 (ISSN) Zirak, M ; Zhao, M ; Moradlou, O ; Samadi, M ; Sarikhani, N ; Wang, Q ; Zhang, H. L ; Moshfegh, A. Z ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Abstract We report the well-controlled preparation of WS2 nanosheets-CdS nanoparticle heterojunction for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting application. The WS2 nanosheets with an average thickness of ~5 nm and lateral dimensions of ~200 nm were synthesized via liquid phase exfoliation of bulk WS2 in water/ethanol solution, followed by deposition onto ITO substrate via electrophoretic method. CdS nanoparticles were grown via facile successive ion layer absorption and reaction (SILAR) method. Using these two well-controlled methods, CdS/WS2/ITO and WS2/CdS/ITO systems were fabricated. The loading of WS2 nanosheets was...
