    Abstract
In the optimization of naturally fractured reservoirs, it is required to take into account their complex flow behavior due to high conductivity fractures. In this regard, the possible effects of fractures must be included in the optimization procedure. In a water-flooding project, fast water breakthrough from injection to production wells may be occurred because of high permeability fractures. To consider the effect of the fracture system, a multi-criterion optimization procedure is proposed in this work. For this contribution, Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm version II (NSGA-II) is implemented for the optimization purposes. Considering the effect of the fracture system on the flow...

    Abstract
Optimal well placement is a crucial step in reservoir development process. The key points in such an optimization process are using a fast function evaluation tool and development of an efficient optimization algorithm. This study presents an approach that uses particle swarm optimization algorithm in conjunction with streamline simulation to determine the optimum well locations within a reservoir, regarding a modified net present value as the objective. Performance of this algorithm was investigated through several different examples, and compared to that of genetic algorithm (GA) and simulated annealing (SA) methods. It was observed that particle swarm optimization algorithm outperformed...

    Abstract
A single-objective well placement problem is one of the classical optimization problems in oilfield development and has been studied for many years, by researchers worldwide. However, the necessity to face practical applications and handle insufficient data in a single-objective optimization leads to the introduction of a multi-objective optimization framework, which consequently allows an engineer to manage more information. In this study, for the very first time, a multi-objective well placement optimization framework, based on a Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) is utilized with a similarity-based mating scheme. To represent the power of this mating procedure, it is...

A new Optimization Approach for Solving Well Placement Problem under Uncertainty Assessment

    Abstract
Determining the best location for new wells is a complex problem that depends on reservoir and fluid properties, well and surface equipment specifications, and economic criteria. Various approaches have been proposed for this problem. Among those, direct optimization using the simulator as the evaluation function, although accurate, is in most cases infeasible due to the number of simulations required. This study proposes a hybrid optimization technique (HGA) based on the genetic algorithm (GA) with helper functions based on the polytope algorithm and the neural network. Hybridization of the GA with these helper methods introduces hill-climbing into the stochastic search and also makes use...

Development of Multi-objective Optimization Framework for Non-vertical Well Placement

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rostamian, Aref (Author) ; Bazargan, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
An important step in the early stages of an oilfield development is the accurate identification of the location of production and injection wells which has a significant impact on productivity and profitability of the reservoir. Recently, operation companies in petroleum industry focus on production optimization, recovery enhancement and cost reduction; as a result, application of non-conventional wells (NCW) or non-vertical wells have dramatically increased. Well placement optimization is a complicated task as it is a function of several contributing factors including reservoir heterogeneities and economic constraints. The complexity of this task increases when it is considered as a...

    Abstract
Decision on the location of new wells through infill drilling projects is a complex problem that depends on the reservoir rock and fluid properties, well and surface facilities specifications, and economic measures. Conventional approach to address this is a direct optimization that uses the numerical flow simulation. However, this is computationally very extensive. In this study the authors use a hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) optimization technique based on the genetic algorithm (GA) with helper functions based on the polytope algorithm and the neural network. This hybridization introduces hill-climbing into the stochastic search and makes use of proxies created and calibrated iteratively...
