Power System Frequency Control Enhancement Considering Wind Power Plants Participation

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Toulabi, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Ranjbar, Ali Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Synthetic inertial frequency response has attracted increasing attention due to the paradigm shift in power generation from synchronous generators toward wind turbines. Due to application of back-to-back converters in the structure of variable speed wind turbines (VSWTs), their shaft speeds become decoupled from the system frequency and thus, they cannot provide intrinsic inertial response. However, this type of response can be emulated via an extra auxiliary frequency controller or by modifying the conventional control system of the VSWTs. To achieve this goal, a frequency model of VSWT is developed in this dissertation. The power system's load-generation mismatch model is integrated into...

    Abstract
In this paper, a new transmission expansion planning (TEP) model considering wind farms (WFs) optimal integration to power systems is proposed based on the information-gap decision theory (IGDT). The uncertainties of WFs output power and forecasted demand are considered in the problem, and IGDT is used to control the investment risk as well as to reduce the effects of these uncertainties on the investors' strategies. The TEP model is formulated for the risk-averse and risk-seeker investors through the robustness and opportunity models, respectively. Moreover, this TEP model allows WF lines and network lines to be added at multiple time points during a multi-stage time horizon. A genetic...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Toulabi, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Ranjbar, Ali Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Power system frequency regulation entitled load frequency control (LFC) has been one of the important control problems in electric power system design and operation. Off-normal frequency can directly impact on power system operation and system reliability. A large frequency deviation can damage equipment, degrade load performance, cause the transmission lines to be overloaded and can interfere with system protection schemes, ultimately leading to an unstable condition for the power system . On the other hand, the increasing need for electrical energy in the 21st century, as well as limited fossil fuel reserves and the increasing concerns with environmental issues for the reduction of carbon...

Wind Farm Power Optimization Using Cooperative Game Control Methods

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Deljouyi, Nasim (Author) ; Nobakhti, Amin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This research studies the application of coopeartive control and game theoretic approaches in the field of wind farm optimization. The conventional (greedy) wind farm control strategy seeks to individually maximize the power of each turbine. However, due to the presence of aerodynamic interactions (wake effect) between turbines, this strategy will not lead to maximum overall farm power. Accordingly, this study formulates the wind farm power optimization problem as an identical interest game which is utilized to deal with cooperative control problems in general, and the wind farm control problem in particular. Two distributed model-free learning algorithms are then applied to obtain the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Riahinia, Shahin (Author) ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Ali (Supervisor) ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, Mahmud (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Shortage in fossil fuels resources together with the pollution concerns have caused a systematic change in power system planners and decision makers policies to renewable energies as an alternative to produce electrical energy. However, some intrinsic features of the wind energy overshadow its profitability. Inability to predict the wind speed changes and consequently the output level of wind turbines, being an uncontrollable generation unit, and also being an intermittent unit can be accounted as the main attributes of renewable-based units. Taking into account these features, one can conclude that new challenges can be brought into existence in planning and operation issues of...

    Abstract
This paper investigates the effects of two important factors, i.e., correlation of wind farms output with load and wind speed coincidence in determining the required static reserve in a high wind-penetrated power system. To this end, it suggests an analytical approach to involve the effects of these two factors in probabilistic analytical multi-state models of wind farms output generation. Based on an optimization framework with the objective of reaching the desirable level of correlation, the key idea is to calculate some joint probabilities for equivalent models of wind farms. As a result, these models become compatible with the ones for conventional generation units in adequacy studies of...
