, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hasani, Reihane (Author) ; Kariminia, Hamid-Reza (Supervisor) ; Eshraghi, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this project, Olive Mill Wastes (OMW) has been considered as a raw material for a bio-refinery. The project is consisted of a design section using SuperPro Designer software and an experimental section. The biorefinery was designed using the software after conducting a survey on the production of different value added material from OMW. The designed process consisted of xanthan gum, methane gas and agriculture fertilizer production. As much as 15000 L of the diluted OMW (to 50% of the initial concentration) is purified and 88 Kg xanthan gum (in 7 days), 2840 Kg methane gas and 200 Kg fertilizer in 25 days are produced at the same time.
In the experimental section, effect of applying...

    Optimization of Xanthan Gum Separation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ranjbar Golafshani, Maedeh (Author) ; Alemzadeh, Iran (Supervisor) ; Maghsoudi, Vida (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Xanthan is a water-soluble anionic polysaccharide that is produced by anaerobic fermentation using the bacterium Xanthomonas campstris. Xanthan is used in various industries, including food industry and oil industry because of its appropriate rheological properties. For this reason, various studies have been done on the production and recovery of xanthan. In this study conditions for recovery of xanthan gum were investigated and optimized by response surface methodology. Initially xanthan production under optimal conditions that determined in previous studies i.e. YM broth at 30 ⁰C without pH control was performed. After production, the gum separation was investigated using food solvents...

Experimental Investigation of Formation Damage Caused by Polymer Mud

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mahdipoor, Morteza (Author) ; Shad, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In oil industry, increment of drilling mud viscosity is of great importance. Water based polymers are widely use as drilling fluid to achieve this goal. Formation damages can be occurred by invading polymer solution into the formation in different ways such as scale and precipitation. These damages appear in different shapes such as reduction in relative permeability and productivity index reduction. In this study we have proposed, designed and fabricated a novel device, called sand pack, to measure the damage of the reservoir which enable us to calculate relative permeability and recovery factor by means of pressure difference and flow rate. Using this lab-scaled device we have measured...

Novel modified starch-xanthan gum hydrogels for controlled drug delivery: Synthesis and characterization

    , Article Carbohydrate Polymers ; Volume 79, Issue 4 , 2010 , Pages 898-907 ; 01448617 (ISSN) Shalviri, A ; Liu, Q ; Abdekhodaie, M. J ; Wu, X. Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This work was intended to develop a new cross-linked gelatinized starch-xanthan gum hydrogel system, to characterize the properties of the new material, and to explore its potential applications in controlled drug delivery. Cross-linked starch-xanthan gum polymers were synthesized with varying levels of xanthan gum and sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP). The reaction of starch-xanthan gum polymers with STMP was examined using solid 31P NMR spectroscopy and FTIR. Morphology of the films made from the new polymers was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The swelling properties and the network parameters such as gel mesh size of the films were investigated. The permeation of solutes with...

    Abstract
Xanthan gum is a water-soluble exo-polysaccharide. It is produced industrially from carbon sources by fermentation using the gram-negative bacterium Xanthomonas campestris. There have been various attempts to produce xanthan gum by fermentation method using bacteria and yeast by using various cheap raw materials. In this study the cultural conditions for xanthan gum production by Xanthomonas campestris were investigated and optimized by response surface methodology, to maximize cell and xanthan production in batch experiments using YM broth without pH control. The individual and interactive effects of three independent variables (carbon source concentration (40-80 g/l), nitrogen source...

    Abstract
The proper understanding of rheological characteristics of CGA based fluids is of crucial importance in determining the performance of the fluid, in order to maintain the most effective fluid properties for safe, efficient, and economical drilling operation. This paper presents a concise investigation on the effect of concentration of the three main components of a novel environmentally friendly lightweight CGA based drilling fluid, i.e., xanthan gum biopolymer, starch, and biosurfactant, to the Herschel-Bulkley rheological model parameters. The three parameters of Herschel-Bulkley model, i.e., yield stress, fluid consistency, and fluid flow index were calculated by fitting the experimental...

Rheology, stability and filtration characteristics of colloidal gas aphron fluids: role of surfactant and polymer type

    , Article Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering ; Volume 26 , September , 2015 , Pages 895-906 ; 18755100 (ISSN) Tabzar, A ; Arabloo, M ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Colloidal Gas Aphron (CGA) are finding increasing application in fields of science and engineering because of their distinctive characteristic. As interest in the application of CGA based fluids grows and in order to select the best procedure for using them in successful petroleum engineering operations, there is a need to gain a better understanding of the factors that affect their properties and behavior. This article discusses the rheological characterization, stability analysis and filtration properties of CGA based fluids for three bio-polymers and two ionic surfactant. The stability and filtration analysis were investigated with the static drain rate technique and API filtration tests,...

Monitoring the role of polymer and surfactant concentrations on bubble size distribution in colloidal gas aphron based fluids

    Abstract
Colloidal gas aphron (CGA) based fluids have recently been introduced to develop depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs due to their ability in controlling fluid losses. Bubbles size of CGAs plays an important role in pore blockage ability as the controlling mechanism in fluid invasion reduction. However, fundamental understanding of how bubble size distribution is controlled by polymer and surfactant concentrations is not well discussed in the available literature. Almost all reported experiences on CGAs sizing were conducted on single bubble behavior, and little attention has been given to the variation of bubble size distribution (BSD) of CGAs at different levels of polymer/surfactant...
