  7. Abstract:
  8. Masonry buildings are wide spread in Iran and some other countries . These buildings are highly vulnerable to seismic excitations if not constructed in accordance with engineering fundamentals . Thus it is necessary to retrofit these structures to flee from humanitarian and economical damages inflicted by earthquakes. One of the critical vulnerabilities of masonry buildings is due to transverse instability of it’s infills . Therefore to study out of plane behavior of these elements , an infilled frame is modeled and analyzed with ABAQUS , the results of which is in good congruence with the experimental one . In this model , stress distribution due to one way arching action in the confined panel is closely studied , which resulted in derivation of a simplified model and equation to predict the transverse resistance of infilled frames . precision of the proposed equation is confirmed by comparison with a large number of experiments and previously derived equations . In this model , effect of elasticity modulus of the infill and stiffness of the boundaries are taken into account . Afterwards , an FRP retrofitted infill is modeled and the analytical results are verified with the experimental one . Similarly , after studying the stress distribution in the retrofitted panel , a simplified model is proposed for resistance prediction and design of FRP retrofitted infills . The analytical model shows that anchorage of FRP laminates to infill boundaries enhances transverse resistance and ductility of the panel . Otherwise , lack of such anchorage would result in brittle failure of the infill and short efficiency in exploiting high tensile strength of FRP fabrics . Moreover , it is shown that if the width of horizontal crack or gap on top of the infill exceeds a specific value , called critical crack , it would be statically unstable and would overturn like a simple unconfined wall . Critical crack width can be easily calculated and applied for evaluation of infill-to-frame connection
