  7. Abstract:
  8. Post-tensioning is the most versatile form of prestressing, a technique which enables engineers to make the most effective use of the material properties of concrete, and so to design structural elements which are strong, slender, and efficient. Design of post-tensioned concrete structures is not difficult and, if done properly can contribute significantly to the economy and the aesthetic qualities of a structure. Post-tensioned building floors and bridge girders have found widespread use in office buildings, parking structures and bridges. They are also frequently employed in warehouses and public buildings. Now a days bridges and other type of structures, in many countries are designed using post-tensioning technique. The objective of this thesis is to present design, analyses, usage and benefits of this method. Paying attention to the new designing methods provides economical benefits. In this study two common sections will be analyzed (designed) by AASHTO LRFD method and PCI BRIDGE design manual in which design live load of HL-93 fatigue truck loading for bridges is utilized and complete dead loads, and four-lane traffic are considered in the design.
The span lengths are varied from 10 to 60 m in length. Based on the results, span length determines the type of section, which is appropriate in design. In addition, beyond a certain span length, conventionally RC sections become inefficient, uneconomical and too heavy to carry even their own weight. Therefore, efficiency and economical analysis performed the capabilities of prestressing systems
