  7. Abstract:
  8. Many airlines operate different fleets under different service conditions. These aircraft fleets need to be maintained in service. Safety, reliability and economic reasons motivate manufacturers, airlines and airworthiness authorities to investigate about different approaches to aircraft maintenance. At first, corrective maintenance which was developed for other industries was used by the aircraft industry but due to increasing complexity of aircrafts and their systems the industry started using time based maintenance. After years of operation and fleet experience, this industry started developing a program of its own i.e., MSG-1, MSG-2 and MSG-3. These maintenance programs have been evolved ever since, but MSG-3 which utilized the principles of Reliability Centered Maintenance was recommended by the airworthiness authorities as the most complete and reliable program. According to MSG-3 document the aircraft can be divided into two subdivisions: 1) Structure 2) System and power plant. In this thesis, MSG-3 and its method of implementation has been explained. For a case study, skin panel of the fore body cargo door of the fuselage structure which is considered as Principle Structure Item in Boeing 747 has been investigated for implementation of MSG-3 due to Fatigue Damage (FD). For this item, inspection interval is obtained according to damage growth analysis and damage tolerant concept which is required by MSG-3
