  8. Polyethylene (PE) is used as an insulation material for wires and cables because of its excellent electrical properties. For such application, it can be exposed to the high energy irradiation such as gamma ray and electron beam (EB), making possible crosslinking of the PE. Most of the properties of PE are improved greatly after irradiation, but it was harden and split easily. Due to the flexibility of EVA, depending on the vinyl acetate content, it can improve the toughness of the LDPE significantly upon addition to this polymer. As a result, radiation induced LDPE/EVA blend has been a good candidate for the wire and cable insulation. Also, upon addition of a few amount of OC, different properties of LDPE/EVA such as mechanical, physical, thermal and flame retardancy were found to be improved greatly. In this thesis, combined effect of OC loading and radiation-induced crosslinking on the morphological, mechanical, rheological, thermal and electrical characteristics of the LDPE/EVA blend has been investigated. Also effect of EVA content on the dispersion of organoclay into polymeric matrix was studied. Structural analysis carried out by the XRD results suggested that the OC is mainly dispersed in the EVA phase, although, a small amount of agglomerated OC in the LDPE phase was also deduced. The tensile modulus, tensile strength, thermal stability and electrical strength improved with increasing dose. The results show morphological model for LDPE/EVA/OC nanocomposites was supported by the rheological and mechanical data
