  7. Abstract:
  8. In a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) plant, equal moles of methyl acetate are produced as byproduct for every mole of PVA. Since there is a little demand for impure methyl acetate, it is converted to methanol and acetic acid as raw materials of PVA plant via hydrolysis reaction. Duo to the small equilibrium constant of hydrolysis reaction of methyl acetate, the conventional process (including reaction and separation sections) suffers some problems such as large recycle flow and high energy consumption. Therefore, reactive distillation is introduced as an alternative for these processes. Since the reactive distillation integrates both reaction and separation in a single vessel, it has more complex behavior in comparison with conventional process. Thus, dynamic simulation and control structure study of the methyl acetate hydrolysis reactive distillation seems necessary. In the first part of this thesis, a reactive distillation column in dynamic mode is modeled and modeling equations are derived. Afterwards, different standard control structures of ordinary distillation columns are introduced and the performances of these structures are studied for the methyl acetate reactive distillation. The standard L-V configuration for level control along with a fast temperature control loop is suggested as a suitable structure. Finally, the performance of the suggested structure is studied for a non reactive situation. Comparison between the conventional and reactive distillation of methyl acetate, reveals that there is not much difference between dynamic behaviors of these two systems and they are essentially the same.
