  8. This thesis contains experimental studies on mechanical properties of adobe and mud material and investigating seismic performance of a conventional adobe house using shake table tests. Mechanical properties of adobe and mud material were studied experimentally based on ASTM and BS standard tests. These experiments were designed to evaluate compressive strength of adobe sun-dried blocks and mud mortar cubes. Besides, shear behavior and tensile bond strength of adobe assemblages were under consideration and shear tests were done on adobe panels. As next part of the research, several shaking table tests were conducted on a dome-roof adobe house as a conventional representative of arch-roof adobe houses in rural areas of Iran. The model was constructed with 2:3 scale on shaking table of SUT. The model was tested with bilateral excitation patterns during several stages. Longitudinal and transverse components of Zarand Earthquake (Chatroud station, 1385) were selected as input records and excitation levels were 25%, 70%, 100%, and 125% of original intensity. The results of shaking table tests, including time history of acceleration and displacement responses of the structure were recorded. Some dynamic parameters of seismic behavior of the structure, including: natural frequency, maximum acceleration and displacement response, and dynamic amplification factors were determined. Furthermore, crack patterns and failure mechanisms of the model were observed to evaluate seismic vulnerability of dome-roof adobe structures.
