  7. Abstract:
  8. In recent years, pore network modeling has been used to predict various characteristics of porous media from capillary pressure to heat and mass transfer coefficients. In pore network modeling, the void space of a rock sample is represented at the microscopic scale by a network of pores connected by throats. Construction of a reasonable representation of the geometry and topology of the pore space will lead to a reliable prediction of the properties of porous media. In this thesis, a new approach for the construction of pore network models is proposed. This approach is based on the theory of multi-cellular growth simulation, or L-systems. In order to show the capabilities of this approach, it has been used to construct various types of homogenous and heterogeneous networks in which all the static properties of the void space such as effective porosity, geometric boundaries and heterogeneities of different properties are considered. In general, the networks built by this method are irregular pore network models which are inherently closer to the complicated nature of the porous media rather than regular lattice networks. In this approach, the construction process is controlled only by the production rules that govern the development process of the network. In this study, Genetic Algorithm has been used to obtain the optimum values of the uncertain parameters of these production rules to build an appropriate irregular lattice network capable of the prediction of both static and hydraulic information of the target porous medium. Also the pore network model of a real rock sample is constructed and the network results are compared against the experimental measurements. The obtained results show that L-systems are capable of being used as a flexible tool for construction of irregular lattice pore network models from porous media with various types of heterogeneities
