  7. Abstract:
  8. This thesis investigates the performance of concentrically braced frames through numerical simulation approaches. During a moderate to severe earthquake, the bracing members and their connections are expected to undergo significant inelastic deformations into the post-buckling range. Recently, provisions for special concentrically braced frames (SCBFs) were developed to exhibit stable and ductile behavior in the event of a major earthquake. Special Concentrically Braced Frames (SCBFs) are distinguished from Ordinary Braced Frames in that they possess improved post-buckling capacity. Performance based evaluation of SCBF system as well as ordinary concentrically braced frame (OCBF) system under seismic lateral force is the main concern of this thesis. For this evaluation linear static analysis, linear dynamic analysis (Response spectrum) and nonlinear static analysis (pushover) are used to analyse several braced frames. Ductility demand and capacity of sample structures are studied and compared. The performance of the systems with three, six, nine and twelve-story braced frame buildings, which have been designed for a site in Tehran according to 2800 Iranian code, was studied. The proposed design strategy results in SCBFs frames having more ductile behavior and higher capacity than OCBFs.
