  8. This thesis presents a variety of methods have been proposed for optimal locating and sizing of Distributed Resource (DR) in restructured power system to reduce congestion and enhance security. Initially three different methodologies, based upon LMP and congestion rent, are presented that form priority list of candidate buses to reduce solution space. For taking into account security, The N−1 contingency criterion is performed and then a priority list of the worst contingencies from congestion rent point of view is organized. Based upon both normal condition and selected contingencies of the network a priority list of buses for optimal placement and for each level of power output of DR is constituted and then optimal sizing of DR is discussed. The results for the situation that contingencies are considered are compared with those obtained when they are not considered and the differences are discussed. Then impact of generation cost of DR on its optimal locating and sizing is investigated using a hybrid optimal power flow (OPF) and harmony search (HS) optimization method as a novel heuristic approach. After that a cost/worth analysis approach is presented for optimal locating and sizing of DRs. To increase the accuracy of results, load duration curve is constituted and based on this curve different load levels are incorporated into the study. Proposed method considers economical factors such as congestion rent, deferred upgrading investment and DR costs. Different parameters such as load growth rate and different load levels are also taken into account. In order to incorporate stochastic nature of power system, Monte-Carlo method is used to simulate the effect of uncertainty of loads and system on the optimal location and size of the DRs in the network. The proposed methods are illustrated using the IEEE 14-bus and IEEE Reliability Test System (RTS). Obtained results show that the proposed methodologies are capable of finding the best location and optimal size for DG installation, which can alleviate congestion in transmission system and increase security of the system.
