Modeling Brachial Blood Pressure by Using Finger PPG Signal

  8. Nowadays, all of the devices that measure blood pressure commercially at home are using wrist or arm cuffs preventing the systolic or diastolic blood pressure from being measured continuously. Various parameters such as blood flow with some degree of correlation with blood pressure that can be measured noninvasively have been suggested. However, these parameters do not produce accurate estimates for blood pressure. Pulse Transit Time (PTT) which is defined as the interval between the R peak of ECG signal and the next PPG signal valley has shown to have over 90% correlation with systolic blood pressure in past studies. In this thesis, the relationship between the value of the systolic blood pressure recorded from volunteers through an automatic blood pressure measurement device and PTT is investigated. Volunteers in the experiment were fourteen males between 24 and 28 years. The correlation between PTT and hydrostatic pressure (height of the hand from the heart level) was over 80% in 8 cases. The correlation between PTT and systolic blood pressure also was studied and it was above 80% in 8 cases, too. However, measurement variance was above 8 mmHg which is not acceptable in medical applications.Considering that PTT uses both ECG and PPG signals, finding a parameter which uses only one signal seems appropriate. So a new parameter derived from the PPG signal has been introduced in this thesis which is the ratio of two peaks in a heart cycle of the PPG signal first derivative. The correlation of this parameter with PTT was over 80% in 8 cases and was over 50% in the remaining 6. This parameter could be a promising way to use the PPG signal alone when estimating blood pressure
