  8. Material selection is one of the most important works should be done prior to the designing of any part of the mechanical and/or nonmechanical structures. Various material selection methods, such as digital logic, modified digital logic, z-transformation and fuzzy logic, have been introduced and used in recent years. All these methods have some advantages and disadvantages in selection of appropriate materials. Since, all these methods exhibit some disadvantages, the main objective of thesis is to introduce the new method to reduce or eliminate the other method’s disadvantages with less complexity. The fuzzy logic method which is mostly used in this thesis will result in some problems due to lots of inputs. Here, the main oobjective is to eliminate some complexities in using the fuzzy logic membership functions and introduce the simpler method with higher applicability. This method is called modified fuzzy logic method. Despite the simple calculations used in this method and user’s desire to use any fuzzy logic membership functions, classification done by this method is as strong as the standard fuzz numerical method. Then, some examples are presented in the thesis using the new method and the other logical method to solve various problems in wide range of mechanical applications. Material selection process of the gas turbine blades and their coatings are also the problems considered and discussed in the thesis. It should be noted in material selection of the turbine blade and its coating, despite the other methods which use only the material properties in selecting material, the material indices are also considered in this new method introduced in the thesis. Some of the most important advantages of this method are to eliminate the weighting factors and show the most simplicity in material selection process. At the end, the results show good correspondence with reality and actual applications
