  7. Abstract:
  8. packed columns are important in liquid-liquid extraction processes. In most studies, at first, drops are broken to small drops as much as possible and then they contact with packings. But, because of different reasons drops during their moving up coalescence together. So far, there is not serious investigation about hydrodynamics of these large drops and their breakage in packed columns. Thus, breakage of two different sizes of drops while collision to 3 different height of 4 different type of packings with two volumetric flow rates and in 2 cases of straight collision of drops to bed and collision to support plate has been investigated. Then size distribution of produced drops throughout packings with two different methods that one was making equivalent of volume of spheroid drop with volume of a sphere and the other was using of formula given in Wellek's study earned and equivalent drop diameter was calculated, thus using of second method gave a less diameter than first. Also it was guessed, with increasing in the height of packings caused producing of small drops and increasing in breakage. An increase in flow rate produced a wide drop size distribution. When size of orifice increased, an increase in flow rate made a wide drop size distribution and increased rate of breakage. Almost in high flow rate, the behavior of all packings approached to each other. Probably, the only effect of increase of the height of packings is increase in resident time and increase in contact surface, otherwise, it is clear that with increase in flow rate, coalescence of drops increases greatly. Shape of some drops during their coming up and separating from the upper surface of the bed changed from oblate to a prolate drop.
