  7. Abstract:
  8. Concentrations of air pollutants emitted by motor vehicles in traffic tunnels, due to low access of tunnels to Open space increases rapidly. Increasing the tunnel pollutant concentration, decreases tunnel air quality level which is very dangerous for human health. Thus study of traffic tunnel air pollution concentration and dispersion is important for offering control strategies in these spaces. This investigation has been tried to study vehicular pollutants emission and dispersion inside traffic tunnel by data collection that involves traffic, meteorology and air pollutants characteristics in a urban tunnel. So data collection was carried out in the Resalat tunnel located in urban metropolitan Tehran. After preparing and analyzing the study database, CO, NO2 and SO2 emission factors were obtained using mass balance models, Japan weather Association models for Tehran, MOBILE6.2 and EMFAC2007. Regression models to predict CO, NO2 and SO2 vehicular emission factors was developed. Regression models to predict the concentrations of these pollutants inside the tunnel was developed. Concentration of pollutants and thus the emission factors obtained in the North tunnel were greater than emission factors obtained in the South tunnel. This could be due to the north tunnel uphill and south tunnel downhill. Obtained emission factors using quasi steady state mass balance model were greater than obtained emission factors using simple mass balance model. MOBILE6.2 and EMFAC2007 predictions in South Tunnel were in relatively good agreement with mass balance models results. SO2 emission factor in both North and South tunnel was much more than Japan Weather Association, MOBILE6.2 and EMFAC2007 predictions that can represent inappropriate condition of Tehran gasoline and gas oil sulfur content
