  7. Abstract:
  8. Recently, demand for using variant applications in distributed networks has been increased largely. Most of these applications are based on group communication. In distributed group communication, two important factors need to be considered, group construction, and Group Key Management (GKM). The group construction specifies the process of constructing a new group by cooperation between distributed users. As well, GKM ensures re-freshness of the group key after each join/leave operation. Both of these tasks must be done by collaboration between members. This leads to imposing complexity and communication overhead to the system. This thesis proposes efficient methods for group construction and GKM in distributed group communication. For this purpose, the group members are managed in the hierarchical manner (binary key tree) in which members are assigned to the leaf nodes of a logical key tree. Two kinds of keys are used, asymmetric and symmetric which are belong to group members and intermediate nodes respectively. By developing the mechanism of the key tree, we adopt the new protocol to manage simultaneous join/leave of members. For both simultaneous join/leave processes, two cases are considered, the best-case and the worst-case. The concept of group construction is used to convert the worst-case of simultaneous join process into the best-case.Some features of the proposed methods are that at join no keys are exchanged between the existing members and at leave only one key, the group key, is delivered to remaining members. Moreover, this method reduces the number of necessary rounds for group construction from O(n) to O(log n). These properties make the proposed method efficient, fast, and profitable to have secure distributed group communication.
