  7. Abstract:
  8. Overpressure protection and flare loading network are critical challenges faced by the Oil & Gas and chemical industries. Whether they are new facilities or aging ones, integrity management of overpressure and flaring systems remain significant throughout the life of the planet. One of the most important ways for protection of over pressure and depressurizing to flare header through pressure safety valve is implementation of safety instrument system (SIS). Application of safety instrumented systems for the process industries causes significant reduction of flaring load and loss prevention of valuable materials through increase protection layer availability and over pressure risk reduction. The main objective of this master thesis is to study the applicability of the SIS with quantitative approach fault tree analysis regarding its ability to determine appropriate Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) for SIS. A case study for atmospheric distillation plant in south of Iran which has been performed to examine the applicability of FTA to determine appropriate SIS. Result of this study includes over pressure and flaring scenario and quantitative risk assessment of them, determine independent protection layer and then implementation of SIS with minimum safety integrity level (SIL) as measure of safety system performance via improved basic process control system in order to reach tolerable unwanted flaring risk.
