  7. Abstract:
  8. Increasing need to electrical energy, gradual diminishing of fossil fuel resources and environmental pollution due to continuous exploitation of them, have lead to inevitable change of energy sources in power generation. Due to random nature of wind speed, the power output of a wind farm is varied and as a result, it does not have a proper control capability. If the wind power has a major role in system generation, the system could not respond to the fluctuations appropriately. With the increasing penetration of wind power, it affects different aspects of power system such as power quality, system stability, and system reliability. Utilizing energy storage systems (ESS) is a solution to overcome the variable nature of wind turbine generation and they are required to smooth the fluctuating nature of wind energy. By appropriate operation of energy storage there could be a closer match between wind power generation and demand. The reliability associated with a power system is a measure of the overall ability of the system to perform its basic function. Competitive electricity market and the growing dependence of modern technologies to electricity have increased the importanc of system reliability. The output of a wind turbine generation is intermittent and wind is not always available when we need. Consequently, utilizing energy storage systems diminishes these negative characteristics and they are required to smooth the fluctuating nature of wind energy. In this thesis, different energy storage technologies are reviewed and the fundamental concepts of power system reliability are described. Furthermore, the effect of wind power generation on power system reliability will be reviewed; afterwards, the benefit of utilizing ESS with wind farm on system reliability is evaluated. The simulations are conducted on two test systems, RBTS and IEEE-RTS. Furthermore, the effect of charging and discharging constraints of ESS and its failure rate and different wind regimes are investigated.
