  7. Abstract:
  8. To meet the growing energy demand worldwide, oil and gas exploration and production activities have increased rapidly both in onshore and offshore areas. The produced oil from the ocean bed is transported onshore either by ship or pipeline. This has increased the risk of oil spill in the coastal areas. In order to prepare an emergency preparedness plan and to assess the magnitude of risk involved in transporting and offloading oil, oil spill simulation studies play an important role. This research describes a simulation of oil spill in coastal area of Persian Gulf, near Hormoz Strait which is called Gheshm Channel (Khouran Strait), using MIKE 21 model. The Gheshm Channel contains huge multi-purpose ports and harbors like Shahid Rajaee and Shahid Bahonar ports at east, and Hara Forest at west. These places made Gheshm channel as an ecological fragile area. Considering the sensitivity of the area it is important to simulate spills and leaks of oil in this area to draw a suitable management plan to mitigate the adverse impact due to such accidents. Based on this research two probable scenarios, one for 15000 m3 oil spill in the eastern part of Gheshm Channel and the other for 15000 m3 oil spill in the western part of Gheshm Channel are considered. The MIKE 21 model was calibrated for hydrodynamics using measured field data followed by oil-spill simulation to track its movement. The results for eastern and western parts of channel show high differences in the distribution of oil. It was observed that in the western part spilled oil will move towards the Hara Forest first and it will move forward to the coastal areasafter 4-5 days, but in the eastern part spilled oil will move towards coastal areas between Shahid Rajaee and Shahid Bahonar ports in less than 24 hours with a high pollution concentration. In both parts more than 30% of the diesel will be evaporated within 48 h of oil spill. Based on the results, one can propose a cleanup and contingency plan to mitigate the adverse impacts arising due to oil spill in the study area.
