  7. Abstract:
  8. Natural gas contains small amount of benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and meta-xylene (BTEX). These compounds are soluble in amine solutions and accumulate in aqueous amine solution during sour gas removal process. They produce problems such as foaming in amine adsorption columns. The aim of this work is to study BTEX removal from aqueous amine solution by means of activated carbon. Three different commercially available granular activated carbons were used in experiments. Experiments were divided in static and dynamic adsorption categories. In the static tests, equilibrium adsorption of all three activated carbons were performed and the most effective activated carbon sample determined by analyzing adsorption isotherms. The best activated carbon sample then used in dynamic test which were designed based on RSSCT method. In the first step, the adsorption isotherm and breakthrough curves of for benzene (B), toluene (T), ethyl benzene (E) and meta-xylene (M-X) in 30% (w/w) aqueous solution of DEA were determined individually. In the next step, the isotherm and breakthrough curves for BTEX mixture in a 30% and 45 %( w/w) aqueous solution of MDEA and 25%/20% (w/w) mixture of MDEA/DEA were carried out. Langmuir, Freundlich and Sips isotherm models were used to describe the equilibrium data. The analysis showed that the Sips isotherm predict the system behavior more accurately. The results of static tests demonstrated that Aquasorb 2000 activated carbon has more adsorption capability for BTEX among three activated carbon samples used in this study. According to the isotherm curves obtained from experiments, the amount of adsorption for benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and meta-xylene, increases respectively.
