  7. Abstract:
  8. Nowadays, wireless communications for multimedia purposes is widely spreaded especially due to video communication demands. One of important considerations in this area is to receive video stream with less effect of errors related to transition channel as well as optimal utilization of bandwidth. The H.264 is exploited as the most efficient video compression standard and because of its predictive nature of encoder and decoder, it is very sensitive to error propagation, so error resilient technics should be applied along with the video compression to reduce the visual impacts of error occurrence and propagation. In this thesis existing methods of video error resilience, video quality measures and different models of wireless channels are reviewed and then three methods are proposed to make H.264 standard resilient to error in wireless environments. In the first method, in order to avoid aggregation of burst error, a new pattern is introduced for grouping of macro blocks into slices to help concealment algorithm in the decoder to achieve better results, when channel errors cause loss of parts of video. Because of predictive coding of H.264, loss of whole of a frame may cause wide error propagation in next frames of video stream, so in the second method a framework is proposed to interleave the slices of consecutive frames based on wireless channel characteristics to reduce the probability of whole frame loss. Finally in third method, at first redundant data is extracted from source video and then sent along the compressed video data to improve the results of pre-designed concealment algorithm at decoder side
