  7. Abstract:
  8. The development of natural gas supply systems and its transmission networks are vitally important to achieve a natural gas economy. Development and planning of natural gas transmission networks as multidisciplinary projects have crucial impact on the economy of gas-rich countries like Iran. The nvestment costs and operation expenses of pipeline networks are so large that even small improvements in system utilization and planning can involve substantial amounts of money. A large number of technological options exist for development in conversion, distribution levels and …, which cause various pathways for supplying natural gas. In addition there are many energy recovery technologies along with the main levels of gas transmission network to increase the system performance. Besides the technical factors, there are other effective parameters such as cost, operability, reliability safety and social implications that should be considered when assessing the different pathways as optimal and viable long-term alternatives. To aid this decision-making process, we have developed a generic optimization-based model for the long-range energy planning and design of future natural gas supply systems. By applying Linear Dynamic Programming techniques, the model is capable of identifying optimal investment strategies and integrated supply system configurations from the many alternatives. We show the features and capabilities of the model through application to Iran as a case study
