  7. Abstract:
  8. Pipeline systems are one of the cheapest ways for distribution and transportation of petroleum and natural gas. The testing of pipes used in the petroleum industry is necessary to avoid unplanned process interruptions, environmental pollution and provide good safety. One of the methods which is used for pipeline inspection is the ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT) technique. The use of conventional NDT techniques such as ultrasonic thickness gauging is a slow inspection process, which becomes very expensive when full inspection is needed. Ultrasonic guided waves provide an appropriate fast screening technique. These waves stress the whole pipe wall and propagate along the length of the pipe; they are partially reflected when they encounter features such as welds, branches, drains, corrosion patches, etc. Also these waves can reveal more information about structure defect than conventional ultrasonic waves. The present work investigates the method of leak detection of pipes using a guided lamb wave approach. An efficient and accurate finite element model is developed to study the interaction of guided lamb waves with defects in pipes. It has noticed local material parameters (for oil pipelines in Iran), such as density and pipe efficient thickness, etc. A parametric study is carried on to closely monitor the effect of defect location in the wave signal. It is observed that using a guided wave to monitor the defects is more efficient and less costly than other conventional NDT techniques.
