Assessing Precision of Commercial Ultrasonic Instrument in Detecting Hole and Imperfection in Concrete Bridge Decks

  8. The conventional methods in concrete are usually divided to destructive and nondestructive tests. Among these, nondestructive tests are more preferable because they don’t damage the structure or at least the damage doesn’t significantly affect its performance. According to precision of estimation of concrete conditions, nondestructive tests have different levels. These tests on concrete bridge decks range from chain drag to more developed test like Ground Penetration Radar in concrete The optimum ease of use, cost and the precision of results of Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) test compared with other nondestructive methods have made it a most widely used method. The precision of results of UPV mainly depends on 2 factors. First: the appropriate contact of ultrasonic instrument transducers to the surface of concrete, Second: The precision of the ultrasonic instrument in calculating the time between sending and receiving of ultrasonic wave in the presence of damage. In this research first different materials were used as ultrasonic couplant to investigate which of them provide the best contact between transducers and concrete surface. After selecting the best one, the precision of ultrasonic instrument was investigated. In order to investigate this issue, 9 concrete slabs with embedded cavity were casted. Cavities with different sizes were embedded in the center of the slabs and the UPV test results in presence of different cavity sizes were obtained and compared. Results shown that, grease can be effectively used as ultrasonic couplant in UPV test and if a good contact between ultrasonic transducers to the surface of concrete can be made, the ultrasonic test results can estimate the start point of damaged parts efficiently
