Probabilistic Safety Assessment of IR-360 for Station BlackOut Accident (SBO) and Determination of the Frequency of Occurrence

  8. Station Blackout (SBO) involves Loss of Offsite Power (LOOP) concurrent with failure of the onsiteemergency ac power system. Although SBO is a beyond designbasis accident, in recent years this accident attracts a lot of attention. Fukushima nuclear accident which was initiated by earthquake followedby tsunami led to a SBO accident. In this thesis, Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) is applied to analyze SBO in IR-360 nuclear power plant and to compute its frequency. Meanwhile, weak points of the plant are identified in order to minimize the SBOprobability of occurrence. Fault tree method is used to evaluate emergency power system and offsite power system reliabilities. Common Cause Failure (CCF), importance and uncertainty analyses are performed using SAPHIRE and RiskSpectrum software. Emergency power system failure probability is calculated to be1.732E-004 and 1.876E-004, respectively. Also, frequency of occurrence of LOOP accident is found to be 2.607E-05in SAPHIRE and 2.607E-05 in RiskSpectrum. As a result, SBO frequency is estimated to be4.52E-09 and 4.89E-09. Common cause failure found to be the major contributing factor inemergency power system failure. Transformer failure also plays an important role in LOOP occurrence. The comparisonbetween SAPHIRE and RiskSpectrum results indicatesthe software defects. Considering American nuclear power plants experiences, statistical methods for estimationof the LOOP frequency of occurrenceare studied.A procedureis introduced for estimation of initiating events frequency which is carried out by SAS, WINBUGS and MATLAB software. The procedure is validated by American commercial nuclear power plants data.
