  7. Abstract:
  8. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is a multidisciplinary emerging research field. SHM assesses the health state of the structure through processing and interpreting of signals and can predict remain life of the structure. Damage detection with Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensors (PWAS) is one of the effective and emerging methods of SHM. One of the most critical parts of aerial structures is lap joints in which SHM could be very effective. In this research, damage detection of lap joints using lamb wave propagation has been studied. A 3D model of an aluminum lap joint presented. The PWAS are modeled separately and bonded to the host structure and coupled electromechanically with the substrate through coupled-filed elements. Lamb wave were excited in structure and received from structure by Pitch-Catch method In order to validate FEM model, some criteria considered and the accuracy of simulation method verified by those criteria. In order to achieve a suitable sensor and actuator arrangements, two arrays of PWAS were modeled. Comparison of the obtained results conducted to the most suitable sensors and actuator arrangement which were used in further models. Consequently, SHM of lap joints were studied via two models which represent logical methods to monitor the lap joint health state
