  7. Abstract:
  8. Environmental conditions of various cities of Iran are deteriorating due to various contributing effects of increased traffic, deforestation, industrial pollution etc. Arak is an example in point. It is a city of about 440,000 inhabitants. It is located at the edge of the main central desert (Kavir) of Iran. It lacks any appreciable vegetation or wooded areas and it is the home of a number of major industries. These include aluminum smelting, petrochemical industry, refinery, power plant and various other heavy manufacturing facilities. It was suggested to perform an air sampling of the city for a whole year (2010-2011) to determine the concentration of various elements by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). It was also suggested to try to measure TSP from the various sources by running the AERMOD software and compare the TSP data with the analytical experimental results. The devices for sampling the TSP in the ambient air were high volume samplers, which consisted of suction motor and a filter holder and two timers. The air samplers operated for 24 hours intervals and placed at the four major cordinal directions. The result of the TSP obtained from the AERMOD and those obtained from INAA compared favorably at relatively clean environmental conditions that normally occur in the spring season. This favorable comparison of time of appearance of the dust storm coming from Iraq or local dust storms or temperature inversion occurring in the cold seasons didn’t hold. Comparison of the concentration of the elements of Mn and Fe using the two methods of INAA and AAS prodused very favorable results.
