  8. The economic activities in a country involved with depletion of natural resources and emission of pollutants and gases to the environment. Depletion of exhaustible resources and environmental pollutions are two determinants of sustainability of development. The present research work is aimed at studying the sustainability of Iranian economy in 2009. The analysis of sustainable development of economy is based the concept of exergy, exergy efficiency and ecological exergy efficiency. Exergy efficiency is the ratio of the exergy of a product in economic activity to the exergy of input streams to that section of economy. Ecological exergy efficiency is defined as the ratio of exergy of product to the exergy of source which also includes exergy destruction due to the emission of pollutants into the environment. Such a definition takes into account the concept of environment as a resource and its degradation is considered as a resource which is utilized when an economic activity is undertaken. The interrelationship among economic activities is represented with the help of a conceptual model which is then used as analytical tool in order to examine the exergy flow through various economic sectors. Analysis of the flow of exergy through economic sectors indicates that exergy efficiency is the highest in the process of exergy conversion and centralized exergy processing systems. It is also found that exergy efficiency is low in end use sectors such as household and transportation sectors
